Cut a long story short, i told my insurance company that I wouldn't be using any of their "recommended" garages for repairing my car.

They told me to get 2 independent quotes from other garages. So I did.

Now they are saying that it is up to their "engineers" which out of the two garages I've got quotes form that they will authorise me to use!

I thought it was my choice???

Surely you'd be happy for them to use either garage seeing as they're the garages you chose for the quotes?

So in essence, it is your choice.
You 'chose' any one of the two.

Yep, surely as you chose them both it is your choice?

Generally in this situation the engineers will choose the cheapest quote, as when I tried to submit my chosen garage quotes they said they were too expensive compared to the approved repairer (who obviously do it cheapest, to get the business).

To an extent. I picked the two best garages in the the whole of the area. But one is offering £100 off my excess and a free courtesy car (even tho i'm not due one via insurance), whereas the other isn't offering me anything.

So ideally I'd like to pick the one that offers all the trimmings.

If they aren't going to charge any of the extras to the insurance company, and they've given the cheaper quote out of the two, they'll probably pick them. However, that's purely from my own experience and I may have gotten a little cynical about how these things work - I hope you get to use the one you want!

Still, if it makes you feel better, I was pretty much forced into using the approved repairer after none of the other quotes were accepted by the engineers and I decided to bite the bullet and just get it fixed, and it took them just over a month despite saying a week max, and no courtesy car (despite being promised one) to fix the car. I'd be glad if any of my choices had been accepted, extras or not if it meant it got done in a reasonable time frame! Fortunately managed to get some compensation back, but hopefully my tale softens the blow if they choose the one without any extras. wink

Ouch. I didn't realise they could force you to use them if they weren't happy with your quotes.

I do have a feeling that my garage of choice will be the more expensive one though, as even though I'm getting £100 off my excess and a no-charge courtesy car, I bet they recoup the expenses with slightly inflated estimates.

They didn't necessarily 'force' me to use them, but they just kept asking me to get 'another quote'. In the end I decided to go ahead and get the ball rolling and just use their approved repairer...at least if things went wrong I could complain to the insurance company and they'd have to do something (and complain I did wink ). However, I may well have been unlucky and they'll approve your quote no problem, I guess it all depends on a variety of things - the company policy, the individual engineer, if your quote is actually reasonable etc. so it may well be fine!

In answer to the original question yes it is technically your choice, but as the insurance company are paying they get final say. Good luck, and hope it all gets sorted. smile
