I am looking for a run around (£4-5k) that will be used for some commuting in the short term and then will become my mrs car by the end of the year. Have been considering an Astra 1.7 diesel as she liked car and has enough space for our needs as well as the boot large enough for the dog. However while browsing, vehicle prices appeared to be higher on the diesel car than the 1.6 petrol equivilant as well as generally having higher mileage. I assume that over a period of this or distance the diesel would be more cost effective but how many miles would I realistically need to be doing in it to justify the extra cost?

This has been done to death I think.

Better MPG v Higher servicing costs

Higher purchase price v better residuals

Not to mention the higher price of diesel these days.

I wouldn't consider diesel unless I was doing 16K or more per year.

Vauxhall's diesels are rubbish too, so factor in crank shaft sensors, flywheels, a turbo, injectors and on the 1.7 probably an ECU as well.

Get the petrol.
