Hello You Lot,

I find myself not giving two hoots about cars any more- well, sort of, anyway- and I'm starting to become more and more obsessed with the simple act of getting there in comfort without it costing too much. Maybe it's the weather. Or my age. Or the age of the weather.

Anyway, after a massive car clear-out, I'm pretty much only left with work vehicles, WHICH I'M TOTALLY FINE ABOUT, two of which- now that I'm using them nearly all of the time- I realise are deeply rubbish on fuel. So, here comes what is possibly my dullest thread ever.

ready?

>sighs< >feels-shame<

What can I buy that won't cost as much to run? Yes, it's a fuel efficiency thread. But, it's a fuel efficiency thread with a difference. Actually, it isn't. It's just a fuel efficiency thread. Sorry. Anyway- let's just get it over with shall we? Time, then, for the tedious criterion part.

I have to carry loads of silly things with me every where I go for my foolish-faux-joy-based-work, and often have to two a large twin axle trailer, filled with a tonne or two of junk I'm trying to pass off as inspiration fodder, and to do this I mostly use a Land Rover 110 TD5 double cab (which isn't as bad as it sounds, but is still bad, but redeems itself by not actually losing any performance when towing, such is the might/ limit of it's power). It's been 'chipped' but not by me, obviously- we've already established I'm far too dull for such frivolity- for more 'power' and MPG but it still only averages about 300 miles on a tank, or 20MPG. Given that it's a diesel, and diesel is more expensive per litre than Gin, I'm wondering if I shouldn't just up sticks to something I like less, for work only at least.

BTW, I totally cant bring myself to remove all of the lovely heavy, causing-masses-of-drag-and-ruining-MPG items on the Landy, despite knowing that would make it marginally better, so don't ask me to. I'm a pikey, not a heathen.

It'd need to be as roomy as the Landy (no vans), capable of towing a couple of tonnes (no vans), super-frugal (no vans) and also really comfy as I have a very feeble spine (no vans). So, does something exist that will do the job, look the part and not be a van? Or am I asking the impossible? (no vans).

For example, in the real world- could a BMW X5, Volvo XC90 or VW Toureg (in any of the petrol or diesel variants for any of them) be a real world proposition, or are they also totally piss-poor?

I'd appreciate any help you could give, folks. Apologies for the raging dullness. If it helps, by way of punishment, I've not allowed myself to have a wee for the entire time it took me to write this, and it's really starting to hurt now.

BTW, the first person to amusingly say 'van' gets a prize. Unfortunately, that prize is AIDs.

funnily enough, the other vehicle is a P38 Rangey, and I could not hate it more. It's like the plague, only fractionally quicker at spreading misery. I can't bring myself to throw any more money at it, and I cant ever buy another.

Thanks for res-erecting me from (already) the doldrums of page 2 though.
