Quick question for you intelligent folk.

I've got to do a 4 hr roundtrip next Friday with a friend - we're taking his car which is an x reg pug 306 1.9 diesel (I don't want to take either of mine as the location is dodgy central).

No issue so far, however back in August his engine was rattling like anything and I believe he thought it was the crankshaft bearing or something (based on some internet self-diagnosis).

Now since the beginning of September 2010 the engine hasn't made that noise again - with the context that the car only ever does short drives and apart from the odd A road blast hasn't done any long journeys.

So almost 4 and a half months of noise free - would you trust this car to be ok on a 4 hour round trip (2hrs there - then a few hours of being stopped - 2hrs back)?

Thanks in advance.

If he had indeed spun a crank bearing the noise would not have gone away on it's own accord.

Make sure someone in the car has got RAC/AA etc and go for it.

You cant beat those kind of road trips!
Get the AA membership, pack all the important stuff in case of breakdown and set off early!

Thanks for all the responses - ^ this is exactly the point he was making, but my mechanical knowledge is limited - wonder what else it could have been?

I'm trying to build my confidence...thinking i might just risk my car !

Could have been a loose pulley or some such, struggling to think of any problems that sound like that but don't result in the engine being on borrowed time to be honest though.

Engine mount perhaps?
