Bangernomics isn't what it used to be.
Discussion
My daily driver has got a few issues with it, that I am loathe to spend the money fixing. It is increasing looking like the car could become a moneypit, so I was contemplating getting rid and getting something bangernomics for a few months use. Job is at risk so I do NOT want to spend anymore than I have to.
However, briefly looking at the used cars available, anything less than £500 seems to be MOT failures and things with snapped cambelts, non runners or 'suspicious noises'.
Has the scrappage scheme completely ruined the cheap second hand market of the £100-£500 bargains that used to exist?

No it hasn't, it's the price of scrap thats keeping the prices up, there's loads of sheds out there but when you can get £250 to £300 for em in scrap you have to pay more for em outside the scrap yard, allways been the way and allways will.
I'll agree with this, except your prices are a little optimistic, for that sort of money you would need to weigh in a 4x4 or something big Opulent said:
Friend picked up a 1990 Prelude for £600. Years ticket, 2.0i 4ws, loads of electric toys, very clean, good tyres, brilliant. I'm actually a bit jealous of it.
Pah! He was ripped!Try a 1997 BMW 328i for only £100 more. (see my profile) - they go for that all the time.
But yes, the combination of scrappage and high scrap prices have taken the real bottom end of the Market, i think. You've now got to have around £500 for something with a year left in it and not too many horror stories to tell.
The days of £50-£100 cars are gone.

Get some cash together (as in folding)
Get on to Gumtree and scan this a few times a day. The cheap stuff seams to be there but it goes quick.
And bid them hard when you have seen something you like
He's right, I just looked on Gumtree (Cambridge) and there are plenty of cars going for less than £500. Get on to Gumtree and scan this a few times a day. The cheap stuff seams to be there but it goes quick.

Thanks for the replies. I may well continue monitoring Gumtree, all of the sub-£500 are too small for my needs though.
My current car has had a leaky heater matrix, screw through a front tyre - with the other on the front needing replacing as it was low, now it's got a leaky damper, suspicious clonking noise, wheel bearing that's shot and now, one of the front calipers has started sticking, so the MPG has taken a dive to the tune of 3mpg. Tax runs out end of February too.
Don't have the inclination, time or money to pile into it. But finding a replacement as suitable and economical seems even more expensive.

I downgraded from a £56k 997S to a £300 Laguna.....In 16 months all I've had to do is MOT it (it passed) Tax it (cheap) and put petrol in it.
I've not even washed it since I bought it!
Works for me (at least while I'm between Porsches )
Wish I had that sort of luck!I've not even washed it since I bought it!

As ever, you need to shop carefully.
I got my fine motor for £400 about 3 months ago, other than a new exhaust back box (which I could have patched if I was really tight) it hasn't cost a bean.
7 seater, wafting lovliness for less than a set of tyres should cost? Bargains are still out there.

Yeah I was lucky, I'm only the second owner. Was close to 100k on the clock but I still bought it unseen...didnt even know what colour it was till I arrived to get it, but I though for £300 - what the hell. Was only supposed to be temporary, but whats not to like (apart from it being st).Burnham said:
