In our town, the Octavia rules the road as a minicab. I've noticed they seem to be getting changed pretty regularly I guess down to wear and tear/mileage.
I assume this happens in a lot of the larger towns and cities across the UK which must add up to thousands of cars a year
So where do all the ex-minicabs go? You never see them on ebay/autotrader and I guess they should be pretty easy to spot so does anyone know what happens to them - do they get broken, resold, crushed, etc? Are there many parts worth recycling even?

They go to auction, minus a couple of hundred thousand miles.

not seen them at my local auction (Blackbushe) - surely can't be worth repairing the holes in the bumper, dash, etc?

They go behind the minicab "office" to be broken to keep the rest of the immaculate fleet on the road.
hehe

I was in an Octavia taxi just before Christmas which broke down. The temp needle was trying to do another lap of the gauge and the oil pressure light came on. (This was in addition to the low brake pads and engine management light we started the journey with. The driver "fixed" it, by parking at the side of the road for a couple of minutes (the engine had stalled) and then setting off again. Every time he stopped at a junction the needle would soar. I suggested putting the heater on full to draw some heat from the engine but there was only cold coming from it. Anyway he got me to my destination and I directed him to the nearest petrol station but the smell/noise that engine was making I don't think it will have survived the night.

Your never see an ex taxi for sale because the identites are "washed" by the lease company and put up for auction like any other high mileage car.

The other impression I get is taxis are recycled straight back into gradually less salubrious taxi companies.

They start off at london private account/airport company on lease, auctioned to provincial town next, privately sold to independant cabbies, then in a pub to unlicenced minicabs.

See quite a few contenders on the back of vehicle transporters heading for Poland/Eastern Europe. Not sure why, but they are routinely taken from near my work (Canvey).
