I've put a deposit down on a used car at a local indie dealer and they're currently prepping it for me.

When I went in a drove the car I looked at all the paperwork/service history etc but the HPI check date was a couple of months old. I decided to go for the car and have put a deposit down.

I did my own HPI check yesterday and there is a mileage discrepancy in the last couple of months, entered by the manufacturer while the car was in getting a couple of warranty bits done.

I have spoken to the manufacturer customer service and they said the reading that looks correct is a key reading, the one that is miles out was a manual entry. They cannot correct/amend any data so I would have to get a letter from the dealer that carried out the work stating that it was their error. They also stated that the extended warranty the car currently has is invalid without this letter.

If I get hold of this letter do I still buy the car or is this going to cause me too many problems with warranty/selling the car?

If I decide not to buy do you think it will be difficult to get the deposit back?

HPIs can be a bit iffy on mileage. I looked at a few cars that had "mileage discrepancies" and mostly it was as a result of typos or people manually putting entries in the wrong box. Can you verify the mileage in other ways - eg service history, old MOT certificates etc. If not, then be worried. If you can, and it all stacks up (eg the car is six years old and has done 12,000 miles per year which you can see from its history) then I wouldnt worry. If the odometer reading is now less than the prior MOT or service or the garage cant produce the prior MOT or service then run for the hills...

ps - either the garage can explain the discrepancy or they should give you the deposit back...

pps - hpi will amend their records when presented with evidence of an error (eg a manufacturer's service invoice detailing work, done, date etc - a stamp in the service book is not enough). They did this on my car and I made sure they did before purchasing. They are quite helpful if you ring them - the garage needs to fax over evidence (assuming there is any..)

The HPI reads:
12 Oct 10 - Manufacturer (was service stamp for this) - 45,733
04 Dec 10 - Manufacturer (warranty work) - 57,822
23 Dec 10 - Manufacturer (warranty work) - 47,080

The MOT will be done before delivey which will show 47,154.

I know it seems quite obvious it's an input error but is this going to cause me issues with selling?

The garage will say it's just an input error, is that a good enough explaination?

It looks like an odd error. With mine the figures were just spectacularly wrong so it went from 2000 miles to 200,000 miles then back to 8,000 miles. With yours, it is difficult to see what the correct figure would have been - not 47,882 as it has done less than that now. I dont think it matters too much - assuming you keep the car for three years and put, say, 30,000 miles on it, it will be way above the higher figure anyway. Just keep all the receipts, service papers and MOT records. I am not sure anyone would bother clocking a car for 10,000 miles from 57k to 47k
