I know the topic of insuring a privately owned car, then transferring to a company car and then back again has been asked before (probably many times hehe) but Im interested in others experience, mainly if its possible to still get a sensible insurance quote!

Scenerio; I have 5 years ncb, but have recently moved to a company car and sold my privately owned one. I realise that if I dont insure another privately owned car within approx 2 years, I'll loose my ncb, however I live in London, have no need for a second car (let alone buy, insure, tax and pay to park it) so won't be getting one anytime soon.

Zoom forward 5 years, and I hope to have a flat / house with parking and will hopefully be looking to get a weekend toy e.g. vx220 tubby. At this point in time I would not be able to use the 5 years ncb I've accrued thus far, but will have (hopefully) 5 years incident free motoring with the company car.

Has anyone been in this situation and got a sensible insurance quote on a group 20 insurance car?

otherwise Ive got to think about buying a snotter just to keep the inusrance going, as when the time comes, I'd be gutted if I can't insure a car for another 5 years due to lack of ncb!

Cheers smile

They do wipe off NCB very quickly even if you have a certificate, and in my experiance they sometime apply an additional discount for a clean Company Car record.

However for toy insurance if you get a car that can be covered by a limited mileage classic policy is doesn't matter.

It'll vary what is considered 'Classic' but it doesn't mean it has to be a Mk1 Jag.

You probably couldn't cover a VX under such a policy, but something like a 911 of the 964 vintage would.

yes

Also, when I insured the Tiv weekend car, they told me that my previous NCB on the Jag would not count anyway.

Just speak to some sports car insurers and explain your situation.

Try a broker - they can sometime be very helpful in thinking "out of the box" as it were.. I had a similar experience recently, new car on its way and ncb all tied up in existing car.

One broker was happy to "mirror" the no-claims so I could have the benefit across the two cars (i think he was going to call it an "introductory discount" or something but the effect was the same).

In the end I found a cheaper quote just going via the comparison sites - confused.com got me close then i rang direct to speak to the ins company. I just finalised it this morning - with a letter from my employer stating my clean driving record over the last 4 yrs LV were happy to accept that in lieu of formal ncd earned with an insurer.

HTH.
