Okay, so it's a what car.. But there aren't a lot of limitations. I'm really just looking for ideas to pitch to my mum. First off my parents aren't big into cars, they tend to buy without doing a whole lot of research - Which I can't really wrap my head around.

My Mums car history (That I can remember anyway) has been an Early Mercedes E190, Mazda 626, Mercedes C220, and now currently a Honda Accord 2.2l. She has expressed some interest in changing her car in February, but she doesn't really know what to get.

The criteria:
-Comfortable
-£30k Max
-Something fairly new
-Something good in ice/frost/snow
-Seat 4 Adults

The £30k is the maximum she's prepared to pay, and unfortunately wants something fairly new. So buying a £1000 shed, and weekend car wouldn't be of any interest to her. Open to anything in the mid price range too..

She doesn't like driving in the snow or ice, and is quite apprehensive about it now. So I had thought about trying to steer towards Audi with Quattro, or something like a 4x4 that even without a set of winter tyres would be pretty good.

For the past few years she's also had Diesel cars; low powered Diesels. I don't know whether her 30 mile roundtrip is worth buying Diesel over a similar Petrol. As all the cars in our house are currently Diesel I'd say it's been quite a while since she has driven one.

So that's basically it, I'm open to any suggestions.. I'd love to let my mother drive something like a Golf R32, Audi TT FSI and for her to fall in love with it. I don't know if that will happen though.

I do drive her car sometimes too..

30 mile a day round trip 5 days a week, 48 weeks times a year is 7200 miles a year.
The TT is tiny in the back and wont seat 4 in any comfort.

£30k is a lot of money. What Volvo options are there with 4wd? Octavia scout?, R32? Dont really like any of these personally but a diesel is pointless doing that milage.
Get her a Subaru Impreza STI and tell her the Prodrive kit makes it better in the snowsmile

A Forester/Outback maybe? Come to think of it just about any Subaru fairs quite well when the road conditions are poor.

This one is over budget, but there are others - and haggling should get close.

something good in ice/snow?

vast majority of cars of FWD/4WD cars for sale in the UK, fitted with winter tyres. even RWD with winter tyres is pretty capable in the hands of a good driver.

the criteria is far too vague, surely if they have a max price, they have a minimum price? and if they want something fairly new, are we talking less than 5 years? less than 3 years? less than 6 months?

My dad's idea of a new car is anything on these new fangled registration plates with two letters, two numbers three letters.

and £30k to spend? there are almost limitless cars in this price bracket.

finally, define comfort. some people think their Z4 with run flat tyres is comfortable.
