How do insurance companies work out premiums? Is it just finger in the air stuff...

Me earlier: Hello Ive bought a new motorbike, I'd like to change my insurance
mong: Ok I need the details
Me: Details given
Mong goes away and comes back 5 mins later
Err sorry but your insurance company (AXA) wont insure you as you havent owned the bike long enough
Me: Well Iv had it one day ? Its new !
mong: You will have to cancel the policy and 're-broker' a new quote
Me: mmmm I have 5 months left on the policy do I get anything back? (wasnt expecting FA as it was £117 comp cover)
mong goes away and comes back another 5 mins at 10p per bloody minute
Err you owe us £5.76...
Me: *long pause* sorry?
mong: Thats only if you go through us again as Iv waived 'some' of the charges it should be £23
Me: so its costing very nearly 25% of the annual premium to be forced to cancel when I dont want to?
mong: yes
Me:How much for the new quote
mong: £234
Me: thanks but I'll go check some quotes

5 mins on the bike insurer website and top 5 quotes all with AXA starting from £119 to just under £200. Went with Dial Direct with LESS excess than I had before and Protected no claims for £145???
Oh and the original brokers showed up with a £161 quote !! with AXA Grrrrr

It baffles me it really does

/ admittedly poor rant over/

This.

My last but one insurer refused to cover my car and the woman on the phone basically suggested insurance fronting was the only way I would stay insured with them?!
I put a post on here to ask whether people reckoned it was to 'catch me out' or whether she was completely unaware of what she was suggesting?!

Scary, scary stuff... The 'trying it on' with renewal pricing pisses me off as well.

Maybe there is an army of 36 year olds crashing 1.6 Zafira's in your area?

I paid £800 for my 56 plate Golf Gti last year! Exact same circumstances. Bizarre.

My personal favourite insurance 'what the hell?' was when I swapped from my crappy Sierra shed with standard 2l engine to a >350bhp Sapphire Cosworth, bringing my insurance down by nearly 200 quid...
