I've been pondering new cars today as my commute to work (55 miles a day) is ending on Friday since I've found a new job near to home.

I've got some money to spend on something with a big engine, as they seem to be going cheap at the mo. What do people make of the Jag S Type R as they're not expensive to buy...? Other options I've considered are a C32 Merc or S4 quattro.

Evo seemed to rate it when they tested it against the BMW M5 of the same era but I've no direct experience of them I'm afraid.

Here's the test:

Personally, I don't think they've aged well in terms of looks - I'd rather have an XJR but each to their own.

Have to say I'd completely forgotten they existed.

Reviews back in the day were all pretty positive, could be a bit of a bargain V8 hero

A mate of mine had one and loved it. I once passengered in it and it was very quick. Looks much much better than the regular S. His cats became blocked up and lunched the engine, oddly enough. If there was an estate version I'd deffo be interested in one. In fact I'd have bought my mate's one with the new motor in it.

C32's are also blisteringly quick and loved by their owners. A size down, if that matters.

Are you talking V6 or V8 S4? The V8 one is one of the only Audis that looks vaguely appealing to me. Very stealthy.

One of the Jag mags compared the two last month. IIRC the conclusion was the S Type, mainly because if you want to use the (near-identical) performance it's the smaller and more chuckable of the two. Me, I'd go for the X350 - I'll probably get flamed for snobbery but it does feel a class above most other stuff on the road.

A good performance bargain barge. Some suffer from major electrical gremlins due to corrosion of the wiring loom. Can't remember which model years were affected.

Had one in the past, would definately recommend, they sound incredible at full pelt! Tyres are not cheap (rears were roughly £280 each!) fuel consumption averaged 17mpg, although if running on cruise control on the motorway 30mpg possible but you don't buy one to save on fuel bills.Go for a post 2004 facelift car, make sure brakes & tyres have been done recently, pm me if you want to know anything else.
