One of the cars I'm looking at has a private plate on it, supposedly worth £so and so. Did a quick Google for private plate valuation and there are hundreds of sites, so was after peoples recommendations really for the most reliable/reputable.

Is it recommended to sell the plate privately or sell it to a 'numberplate seller'?

Cheers

I can't tell you much about the most recommended sites - I'd probably go to a couple that offer email quotes and see how it turns out - but as far as my knowledge goes, the companies that sell number plates do not buy your registration from you, they advertise it and pay you if/when they sell it to someone else, so there's no quick payout on them.

Those adverts always make me smile.

Let's say it's a £10k asking price for a car with a plate they claim is easily worth £1k. Say a buyer came along and a price of £9.5k for car and plate was thrashed out.

What if the buyer then offered to let the seller keep their poxy £1k plate if they'd take £8.5k for the car? I guarantee the seller would turn them down.

Re that and the McSam comment - I think these places just give you a massively inflated indication of price in order to get you "on board". I bought a plate some years back, privately, for around £550, and wouldn't seek to sell it as it's fairly personal to me. Not that long after I bought it, I had someone from a plate company call me (no idea how they got my mobile number) and ask if I wanted to sell. I said no, but then she said "we may be able to get you £20k for it - do you still want to keep it?". Obviously, my ears pricked up at £20k, but when I told her to come back to me with a firm buyer, I never heard from them again (and still have the plate!).

OH is valued at the same even though it spells a persons first name perfectly (with a 5 for an S).

from experience, trying to sell a plate is impossible, I have had a few (came with the cars!!) and selling them hasnt got me any interest past £20. they are NOT an investment opportunity by any means...

If the seller could realistically get £1,000 or more for it within a month he would and it wouldn't be on the car.

surely private plate valuations are utter bks? a plate is worth as much as the highest bidder will pay for it.

JWM 50X is worth nothing to me, but to James William Michaels its probably an absolute mint as a 50th present from the wife.

Plates are surely priced purely based on speed of sale?

if you want to shift it quickly you price it low enough that the world and his mate feel its good value for money, or if you don't mind how long it takes to sell you charge an absolute fortune and wait for the 1 person in the world who feels it's the exact plate for them?
