Gran Turismo Vs Reality On The Nordschleife
GT5 takes on real life in split-screen comparison
This is perhaps not one for those who have a tenuous grasp on reality. Presumably to prove just how obsessive Polyphony Digital's developers are, Sony has released this video showing split-screen sections of actual Nurburgring footage side by side with Gran Turismo 5 in-game shots.
The effect is definitely impressive - and they've even thrown in some comparison footage of the GP circuit to further prove their point.
So, what with PH on your laptop/mobile/chip implanted in your brain* and a near-perfect replica of the Nordschleife on your PS3, do you ever really need to leave your living room again...?
Thre's only one thing confusing us - we never noticed lap times appearing in the corner of our vision in reality before. Oh, wait...

It is impressive, but I think (and you can see this in the video) that you feel too high off the ground in GT5. Like the car your driving is unaturally tall. This is turn has the effect of somtimes making the track feel narrower than it does in real life. It's like your heads at the height of an upright motorcyclist rather than being in a low to the ground sports car.
Also the S2000 in GT5 seems to have alot more tendancy to power oversteer, where it just doesn't in real life. Alot of the RWD cars in GT5 feel a bit too twitchy in that respect.

Before going to the ring in 2006 I spent some playing Gran Turismo on the PS2. Whilst I wouldn't say it was a carbon copy it did give me a good idea of the layout of the track and what to expect... it was pretty good!
Having been since and having now got GT5 on the PS3, it does feel more accurate though I hope to go back some time this year and compare. Assuming it hasn't gone bust by then :|

If you use the bumper cam, its a lot closer to the ground. Which view do you tend to use? Also the S2000 in GT5 seems to have alot more tendancy to power oversteer, where it just doesn't in real life. Alot of the RWD cars in GT5 feel a bit too twitchy in that respect.

Have to agree on the S2000, although I have never driven one, even as standard in the game it makes for a tail happy drive.
I played Forza last night for tthe first time since getting GT5, it felt awful! I'm not a fanboi of either game, and I thought in gameplay terms they were about equal, but I have realised GT blows Forza into the weeds!

Impressive, but I still can't get over how souless the GT5 car sounds are.
All that attention to detail, and it still sounds like Outrun on the C64
sounds are the best they have been, far far better than prologue even, let alone what went before. Have you tried the Mazda 787B or a race tuned Pagani? Any V12 tuned really does howl. I agree that more noise would be good, but you are limited by what you play it through. Does anyone play it through a surround sound system and if so, does that make much difference? All that attention to detail, and it still sounds like Outrun on the C64
Having been to the 'ring a couple of times in the last two years, I have to say that Forza, to me, 'feels' more real - the width of the track and those viscious, viscious kerbs that GT5 encourages you to ride but in reality can rip your wheels clean off. No word of a lie, I saw a lovely Merc 190 2.5 Evo with it's front suspension ripped right off by a kerb there.
As mentioned, the track feels too narrow in GT5, as a perspective thing. It's like a ribbon or Tarmac, a B-road, in reality its quite wide like most racing circuits.
This is despite Forzas interpretation being scaled up apparently, and 2 miles or so too long as a result.
Visually, the GT5 interpretation is impressive, but IMO forza comes closer to matching the actual feel of the place when you're there.
