Just browsing the classifieds and I came across this:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2242088.htm

A quick Google search tells me that Dialynx offer a Sport conversion on regular Quattro models, basically shortening the wheelbase. A closer look does show too much overhang at the front.

http://www.dialynx.co.uk/conversions.htm

Seems a brave move to me, does anyone have any first-hand experience? I'm just curious as to how it drives.

Burnt orange is an extremely polite way to describe it

i really like that, dialynx is a well known name in short sport circles, and apparently their work is excellent. It's certainly had a chunk of money spent on it. There are elements of the bodykit that are a bit naff, but it all fits in with the '90s nature of the car imo.

So the Dialynx cars are well known as being fully sorted are they? I'm ashamed to admit that I'd never heard of them until today.

The front overhang doesn't look that different to me, it could be the bodykit/colour.

Genuine one (according to google)

How do insurance companies feel about someone driving what is basically a cut-and-shut?

Also, this conversion would put it close to being considered a radically altered vehicle depending on how the DVLA define some parts of the car.

Chopping the chassis is 5 points, if a shorter prop-shaft counts as a transmission modification thats another 2 points and a 20valve conversion would be another point. So it could require an IVA, depending on how pedantic the tester is.

I've seen quite a few of these conversions... looks amazing in my eyes!

But seriously, burnt orange... Money > Taste.

A Dialynx Sport Quattro held the 0-100-0 record for quite some time IIRC

I thought that Ford RS200 that Clarkson crashed held that record?

I've been looking at these. I think they are great and a good alternative to the hen's teeth originals- but I don't believe Dialynx offer this conversion anymore- last one was done in 2008.

Differences between a conversion and an original: conversion has slightly different detail/cutout in front of the blistered rear wheel arches; and the windscreen/A pillars are from the coupe donor car.
The original sport quattros used the more upright A pillars/screen from the Audi 80 (the car's structure was pretty much Audi 80 from A pillar forward, but with the bulging bodywork everywhere) as the rally drivers found they had too much glare from the coupe screen.

Replicating the more upright A pillars requires another donor car and even more cut n shut welding.

The front overhang is correct on the conversion; I think the appeal of the sport quattro was that it looks so wierd and out of proportion!

They are well sorted and highly developed cars, yes. I am not sure they would spend all that money and time on development just to get the front overhang wrong. The originals always did look oddly proportioned but it is the classic, function over form. They also had a wheelbase that was shorter than a metro!

I'm pleased I posted it now as I'm learning something.

I'd love to see a bare chassis after all of the cutting work.

IIRC Dialynx offered a short wheelbase conversion and a way more expensive short wheelbase and screen angle adjusted conversion.

They do great work, they had a fettle of my S2 back in the day.

Keith's Dialynx Quattro was a thing of legend, i've seen it hit 60 in under 2.5 secs on the standing 1/4 many times over the years. Astonishingly quick car.

It is the oversized wheels making it look 'wrong'.

Stunningly quick machines, but aesthetically I never got my brain around the Sport Quattro. The LWB will always be the one with my heart I'm afraid.

I can't recall where, but I think I have read something implying that those two statements are related.

I think Dialynx have done a dozen or more SWB conversions over the years and they are a well known Audi specialist. There is one that is running circa 600hp, painted in a blue/silver/purple flip paint and is often down at Castle Coombe and GTI international running up the strip.

It always seems to get mixed reactions, those who know its not original but appreciate the amount of engineering involved and those who simply don't get it.

Very much so, as touched upon by someone else, the screen rake usually the biggest give away to those not aware of the more intimate details of the conversion.
