As discussed on BBC news this morning, should cyclist pay a nominal amount for coverage on the roads?
Thoughts?
Do horse owners have to already?

They shouldn't have to, but British Cycling/CTC should pulicise their membership benefits a bit more. £25/year I think to join the basic BC membership which will give you 10M in third party insurance, as well as discounts from shops, provisional races licence etc etc.

I reckon more regular/serious riders would sign up if they knew it was there.

Good idea, none of them in London seem to know the rules of the road!

I walk the last mile or so to work, and 90% (no exageration) jump red lights when pedestrians are crossing (on a green man)

Getting a licence is a bit OTT, but they should be penalized the same as car drivers for illegal activity, like I did in Holland

They already are penalized the same as car drivers. Unfortunately that generally means they aren't.

Yes they should,if cyclists wish to share the same road network with motor vehicles. A compulsory 3rd party liability insurance cover.

I assume you'd say the same of pedestrians then? And pets?

No.

We already have too much bureaucracy.

No. The last thing we need is more bureaucracy, or bonus payments to civil servants for doing their jobs.

All road users (i.e. not pedestrians) should require compulsory insurance IMO.

This.

I joined the CTC purely for the insurance. I'd personally rather have insurance whilst cycling to work, and for so little a year it's a no-brainer.

I agree with Al. Here in Switzerland, you *should* have bike insurance- you get a little sticker to put on your bike, valid for 1 year. Costs 5 CHF- about 3 quid. That gives you some 3rd party cover at least, should you cycle into someone's Ferrari, and potentially you're covered if your bike gets nicked. I would say mst people in Switzerland would have these stickers on their bikes- it's a no brainer really. In the past, the Police could stop you and fine you if you didn't have such a sticker.

Yet more Health & Saftey Bullst. No!
If this happened then before you know it you would need to carry out a 3 week risk assesment before cycling to the shops.

Just yet another way of people in this country sueing each other and screwing the economy even more than it allready is!
