My eldest daughter will be 18 this July and is a smart level headed girl. About 7 months ago she took the plunge and told me and her mum about her boyfriend, he is a year older and is actually a thoroughly nice lad, works, loves his mum, no chav tendencies and is now a regular fixture at our house. Once there was a level of trust established and some ground rules laid down I've backed off a bit and even put my machete and shovel back in the shed.

He lives about 15 miles away and neither he or my daughter can drive yet, they see each other most days through a combination of train travel and bumming lifts off people.

Unfortunately the main lift provider is one of the boyfriends mates, also 18 with a mummy/ daddy sponsored Fiesta Zetec and to be honest came across as a bit of a nob from day one. My daughter has zero interest in cars, or rather HAD! Throughout the course of her life I have owned plenty of interesting, exotic and quick cars to which she has paid no attention whatsoever, now however I am bombarded with tales about "the zetec" and things got a bit heated a while back when she had been given a lift home in zetec boys dad's 5 series BMW because the dad was away and the BMW was well quicker than the fiesta and you could "get the back end out"! rolleyes After pointing out that he almost certainly wasn't insured on the car, probably wouldn't have the first idea what to do if he DID ever lose the back end and explaining the finer points of TWOC she was expressly forbidden from setting foot in the BMW again. furious

Me and the missus had a further discussion about it as I didn't really want my daughter in any car with the nob but was reluctantly convinced into removing the cotton wool and letting her find her own way in life. Not helped along by her coming home with tales of their mates 500bhp Civic Type R and refusing to listen to me telling her otherwise because "I've no idea what I'm on about, it's a special edition OK!". Not really relevent to my tale, just painting a picture of zetec boys barryboys-esque MacDonalds car park dwelling existence.

Cut to tonight, she has been over to the boyfriends, zetec nob has dropped her off. We have all eaten and she has gone upstairs to complete some college assignment leaving the rest of us sat watching telly. A short time later she has come downstairs in tears, she has had a phonecall, zetec nob has parked his car on it's roof less than two minutes from our house and both he and boyfriend are in hospital, neither TOO seriously hurt apparently although BF allegedly has a hole in his head where his brain cell has escaped.

God alone knows what he has done to park a fiesta on it's roof where the accident has occured, he has either a)Been driving like a complete tt or b)Been driving like a complete tt!

Only saving graces are that they are ALL ok (wouldn't wish anything bad on any young life) and that he managed to do it two minutes AFTER dropping my girl home, not two minutes BEFORE! If that had been the case I'd be fighting off every security guard at the hospital right now trying to get to the little bellend!

Have to wait for it all to come out now, no doubt as per every other 18 year old lads crash it will be down to some freak circumstances rather than poor judgement, little experience and no talent behind the wheel of a car! Just got the added anguish now of wondering where my daughter is every time she isn't safely at home. cry

Maybe a blessing in disguise. My accident at age 19/20 certainly was.

Hopefully this teaches Zetec boy that he's not invincible, nor is he a racing driver and that he should calm down.

Hopefully it also teaches your daughter that driving like a tw@t is nothing to be impressed by.

I almost killed myself in a car accident. I used to drive like an absolute idiot but after the accident I drive sensibly and put my foot down when it's safe.

Had I not had that accident, maybe my driving would have killed me and/or others.

It's a bit worrying that your daughter seems to "into" these cars and style of driving.

It seems to me that most of the lads my daughter was at school with smashed up either their own or their Mum's car within the first year year od driving. Several of them died.

It isn't THAT bad really. Loads of lads roll cars (read this forum ffs! Let alone the 'best crash pics' thread).

However, good stuff that your wee one is OK.

Sadly a too common occurrence.

The trouble is the girls in the back are often not wearing their seatbelts. What's the betting that's the case in the report above?

OP sounds like a bod who would get his kids to wear them.

Just spoken to her, she has heard from them and miraculously they are fine. Apparently could have been a different story if she had been in the car as the bit she would have been occupying is destroyed! yikes

isn't there a restriction in other countries on driving with more than one passenger until you've got over a certain age/held your licence for a few years? admittedly sounds like only one passenger in this car, but i recall hearing this the other day and thinking "why don't we do this too?"

can't help thinking that'd be a bloody good idea in this country.

I don't think that she's particularly "into" them, not really the point I was trying to make, I've had a good few very nice cars and all without exception have failed to garner any interest whatsoever from her.

What I was meaning is that for this bks to firstly register with her and then secondly filter its way back to me through her she must be exposed to it at a fairly major level, which considering he is only really a taxi service to her must be pretty much ALL he talks about.

I was implying that I think he sees himself as the petrolhead expert hero driver of the group.

Teach Daughter to drive, buy her a nice little tidy motor and she can get herself about.

2 Good things to come of this

1, The said fiesta is no more
2, The Fiesta driver will now be st scared of crashing again!

I was young plonker once and managed to tip a Nova on its roof, I wasn't speeding but I was going too fast for the conditions - I learnt a lot that day. My girlfriends parents loaned me a car until I got another one sorted and were generally really good about it.

I can say hand on heart it was a moment I will never forget, it certainly was the kick up the arse I needed!
