Jag XJ realistic offer

Brother in law is looking at buying a 3-4 year old XJ ( old shape ) , most of these are from main dealers , what would be a realistic offer to go in with ,
no trade in cash offer , 500 -1000 off listed price ??
would I be right in thinking he would probably get a better price off a super charged 4.2 rather than a 2.7TDVI due to the higher running costs / road Tax etc ?

Values have gone into freefall for 2/3/4 year old XJs since the launch of the new car. Personally I'd consider an older car which has already taken the big depreciation hit. There's quite a few pre facelift (2007) cars still in the dealer network starting at 10k or so. Don't dismiss the base model V6 either, it's pretty quick - 0 to 60 in under 8sec - and feels it too - but not so refined as a V8 and running costs are lower.
My view is the deisels are usually very over priced. People are drawn to the better economy but you'll only need the bill for one deisel related fault to completely wipe out the fuel savings. There have also been a few comments about turbo lag off the line which your BiL will have to try for himself.
There's a premium to pay for a sat nav equipped car.
Running costs will depend on how you drive as much as anything else - nurse a XJ deisel along and they'll be low, thrash the b
ks off a V8 petrol and they certainly won't be
Servicing is reasonable - find a good indy. No real issues apart from occasional air suspension compressor failures and some of the earlier cars are showing signs of electrolytic corrosion due to contamination in the aluminium bodywork. Usually along the leading edge of the boot lid but seems it can occur anywhere on the body. I've seen a couple of really bad examples. Jaguar honour the 6 year paint warranty but not by doing the job properly. The car gets local repairs and paint but the underlying problem remains and there's been cases reported of corrosion re occuring in the repaired area.
Earlier XJ issues you may read about such as Nicasil lining failure, water pumps and thermostats, throttle bodies and timing chain tensioner failure have all been sorted with the aluminium bodied car.
Two things you will need to have done if the car's a keeper is a gearbox and 'diff oil change. Designating the gearbox and 'diff as sealed for life is a triumph of Marketing over Engineering.
Drive a few and make some offers - after all the dealer can only say no.

he has said he really wants the later facelift version XJ it looks like this came out in 2007 ,looking at the Top gear reports the XJ seems to be well recieved , reliable and high in the surveys.
it does seem to be a buyers market 2k off would certainly be a result

The 4.2 SC doesn't suffer from any "turbo-lag" as it isn't turbo charged, it's forced induction. with 400HP it goes well right from the off.
Expect 22mpg around town and 26-28 on a run.
I experienced brake issues with my XJR that even after £2k spent with the delear I could not resolve (this story is way too long to go into now). P-Zeros flat spot in a big way when left from more than a few days and it feels like you've got squre wheels for the first mile. Unfortunately I suffered from a long list of problems with mine and in the end I just could'nt love it and it had to go. This was a one owner 45K 3.5 year old car when I got it.
But they can't all be dogs? Please say they can't....anyone...one day I will have another.
