ive left insurance on my old car i sold because im very close to 3 years no claims, ive bought a new car which the garage wont insure nor will my insurance company because its too high insurance and im only21, so can i take out a policy with another company and pay monthly then ask them to lower the quote in february when ive obtained my 3 years no claims? I need insurance quickly to get the car, i know ill have to pay a bit more because i can only use my insurance no claims on one car - my old one

That sounds like common sense, just make sure that you get the best deal and the cheapest insurance company without any no claims, may not necessarily be the cheapest with 3 ncb, so just have a search at the time, you be better of changing.
I was thinking of taking out a years policy. Paying monthly and canceling after the month, but i dont know what admin fees id be looking at

Yeah just ring up in february and advise a policy that you had has just finished and you would like to add NCB to your current one, there shouldn't be any problems.
HTH.
Well that sounds like good news for once haha thanks mateHTH.

However....
In the distant past we did similar, and the new owner had an accident and we were pursued by the third party as well as the new owners insurance. IIRC it took a lot of persuading to get the claim removed from our file. You have been warned.
i was worried about this :/, goddamn it its too complicated all thisIn the distant past we did similar, and the new owner had an accident and we were pursued by the third party as well as the new owners insurance. Common sense and insurance companies don't always go together..illmonkey said:
2 policys on 1 car is illegal and can land you in a heap of bother if anything happens. Is 1 years NCB really going to help that much? I've never noticed a big difference.
Its not illegal to have 2 policys on one car, what is illegal is to claim off 2 policies for one car.But that has no relevance to the Op's post he's bought a new car has one policy on new car and old one on the one he's sold.

The new owner would have not known it had a policy, so would have said no.
Its relevant, and its informing the guy that he may want to check if what he is doing is a bit iffy.

Did you not think of sorting insurance first? Why won't your existing insurer swap your cover to the new car? If your current insurer won't cover you with 2 years NCB what makes you think other companies will without NCB? Why do you have to sort it before your policy finishes, giving you the full 3 years?
Sounds like you really haven't thought this through.

If I phone my insurance company up and ask for temporary cover on an other motor vehicle, they ask if it has a policy, I answer yes, they tell me they cant do it.
zollar said:
They say that as it would be too complicated to explain on the phone insurance law and why they can and cannot cover it, your insurer dosn't want the risk of a second car they would prefer the other insurer to add you as a temporary driver.
The average call center insurance worker thinks its illegal but its not.

As long as op got his previous insurer to note that the car is already sold and that he's letting it continue just to build the NCB then all should be ok however as someone noted if a claim happens it can be a bit tricky but thats the risk you take if you don't want to lose the NCB.

I understand your concern, but its not iffy i've done it plenty of times before for policyholders and is an option we offer to save the hassle of losing NCB.
Edit sorry illmonkey i've messed up the quoting

Because ive had quotes from other companies for it without and with no claims bonusSounds like you really haven't thought this through.
I sort of had the same as you.Nearly a years NCB but they wouldn't insure my new bike for the final couple months. I took oput a monthly policy with E-bike who would insure it with no NCB and let the other policy run its course to give me my years NCB. I then cancelled the monthly policy and took out a 12 month policy with a new insurer. Google E-car insurance.
