Opinions: Mk2 Golf GTI or 106 GTI?
Discussion
Bit of an odd question as they are quite different cars but just wanted peoples opinions.
I'm 19 so insurance limits my choices quite a bit, but I've narrowed my next car down to either a Mk2 GTI or 106 GTI, can't decide which one..
I've seen 2 cars I like, both same price however I prefer the looks of the Golf, but the 106 will be quicker and a few hundred cheaper to insure (1100 vs 1400
)....
Any opinions much appreciated
Cheers

normal 106 GTi, not cool.
Rallye, pretty cool.
Modified: not cool.
Normal mkII Gti in standard condition: pretty cool.
In Oak Green with 5 doors, big bumpers and a roof rack: very cool.
Modified: not cool.
Nissan Almera GTi. Not cool. But a better option.
The perfect PH question, and the perfect answer!Rallye, pretty cool.

Of the 2 I'd take the 106 so quickly I wouldn't even notice the golf was there.
However, the previous suggestion of an Almera GTI would stop me in my tracks.... they're a bit left-field but the chairman of my old motor club has run one as a road rally car for years and it's been faultless.
I be insurance would be cheaper than the Golf or the Pug as well.

Indeed, both s
t boxes if I'm honest
Helpful.

I imagine he is picking between the 2 because they are relatively affordable, although unfortunately at the bottom end of their markets they are probably unlikely to be mint ones hence him calling them s

Unless of course i am wrong and he is looking to spend £3k on one.
What is the budget? I am guessing £1500.
What about a Civic VTI? Would trust the honda reliability over both of them.

Having had a few blasts in 106GTIs inc standard and modified (1.3 gearbox on a 1.6 is pretty mental) and having owned mk2 golfs for several years.
I will say the 106 is a cracking little pocket rocket but its too much of a kids car with a reputation only marginally better than a saxo. If i were to get a 106 id be looking for a Rallye version but these (in 1.6 form) are few an far between.
Personally, id go for a mk2 golf but make sure its a good 16v!
A few reasons why,
1) the mk2 WILL hold its value better
2) It comes from the classic era of hot hatches, best compromise between a few modern items like electric windows, central locking, Power steering and still having a raw basic feel about it
3) far more respected, you will find many people who either owned one in the 80s or aspired to own one who will respect it. I park mine outside work surrounded by 07 plate Shoguns, Freelanders, Mondeos etc and it gets plenty of positive comments.
4) parts are dirt cheap and the cars are easy to work on, barely any electrics and sensors are few an far between so diagnosing problems is straight forward.
5) when you find 140-150hp not enough, its peanuts to get a 2.0L ABF engine conversion an get nearer 180hp or VR6/20vt conversions for well in excess of 200hp.

Thanks for the advice Dave, unfortunately insurance wise the 16v's are £500 more than the 8v for me being 19 so it starts getting a little silly.
Plus the one I've seen is an early (85) mk2 so no leccy windows, no PAS, etc, on the plus side its the best condition one I've seen with no serious mods.

I would absolutely recommend the 106, but only an unmolested one. I had one from new on an S plate, sold it and missed it so much I bought another in 2001 on a W plate. Loved them both, a properly chuckable little pocket rocket. Had a few niggles with the latter one but nothing of major consequence, hey, it got driven hard but it gave plenty of smiles per mile.
I love the early mk2s, the small bumpers are much cooler, the seats have a nicer design in my opinion, the wipers swing the other way and it shouldnt have the VW badge in the middle of the back panel.
Go for the golf, although quite a bit slower they are good machines, easy to work on and mine never missed a beat.

I had an early 8 valve when I was 18, and it was a cracking car. Great driver feedback and the steering isn't too heavy so don't worry about that. I've driven 106 GTi's and they're ok, but not much quicker than the Goof's and will lose a shed load of money. The Goof will be peanuts to fix if anything does goes wrong with it, even the fuel injection is mechanical on it
