Cheap car for my Dad?
Discussion
As it says. My dad wants a new car, as he's bored with his 1.6 civic. Fancies something bigger and more comfy. Doesn't want to spend any money though - he's a firm believer in bangernomics which means that it cannot have silly running costs. Equally, he is never going to set the world on fire and is merely looking for respectable, economical and reliable transport. I've been looking over christmas for him, where there has been a lack of local metal, but am faced with a choice today..
would you buy your dad (with his money!)

or this one? http://swindon.gumtree.com/swindon/12/71065412.htm...
Thanks.

E39 5 series is not a cheap car to run, especially one at this price level that will almost certainly require work doing.
Bit sweeping. At that age I'd have the beemer over a ford any day.I bought an e39 528 three years ago for £2,500 and nothing has needed doing to it of any significance.

So well over the OP's budget and at least 3 years younger?Edited by Mr2Mike on Friday 31st December 10:48
just been to look at the volvo. its a hound. and the same as this one... http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2280288.htm (as in this exact car!)
Bag o' spanners springs to mind. Felt like a diesel and had a very grabby clutch. "How long have you had it mate?" "Not long, bought it from my flat mate, but since lost my job so it has to go..." Hmmmm.
Been looking at a few mondeos, especially the V6's, (e.g. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2314311.htm and http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2344895.htm) but he's not so keen. He's had one before (new company car one before he was retired) and I think he just fancies something a little "sillier" or "more interesting". He's also keen on an auto box, and the ford ones are a bit short lived by reputation??
He does few miles now, (less than 5k a year I would guess) so as long as something gets mid 20's mpg and keeps running he'll be happy. Lots of leather, a few toys, preferably a slushbox and a bit of grunt and turnkey reliablility are all on the list. Money is, however, tight. 2 grand max. He loves the camry V6 we've got, and would be sorely tempted by something like a legend, (but can't find him one!)

Mr2Mike
What are the known E39 issues? I've had a good read of honest john, and he seems to like them?
I'm realistic about "I want it now, perfect and for 50 fooking pence" syndrome but what should I look for?
Its amazing how much more careful I'm being when a)it's not my money b) it's not me driving it and c) It won't be me dealing with any aftermath!

What about a Honda Accord Coupe?
The V6s are all autos and they have mostly avoided the barry brigade.

Cracking choice. Bit stylish (well... sleek, and it's a coupé), practical boot for his golf clubs (he's a Dad. Don't they all play golf?), silver (matches his hair) and a nice reliable Honda. The V6s are all autos and they have mostly avoided the barry brigade.

I actually quite like them too.
Failing that buy him a £500 Jag XJ40 - it'll die fairly quickly but he'll have a Jag.

Well, it is fairly recent and cheap. 3 litre V6 and automatic too. When Tiff Needle reviewed it he said he quite liked it so it's got to be better than it's image.

Get him a Mondeo.
Best bit of advice heard all day. They are so plentiful that if something does go wrong, they are cheap cheap to fixLiking the 3 litre accords. They look nice and highly suitable. I think the LS400 will be too large, not sure I could persuade him to get 8 cylinders. £500 quid jaaaag i'd do in a shot, but he's a tad cautious. Would never get mum in the hyundai, she's to much bothered by the badge. Good ol' mundano seems to be being spurned (despite trying to buy rawwrs!) even with a x pack v6. (Might just buy him one of those if i can find it at the right price though...)
Not that he's fussy.
The bimmer man isn't answering the phone and dad's not so keen on a bmw since he put one backwards through a hedge a few years back. The volvo, as mentioned, was howling, and since then have been in the pub / feeling a tad odd.
Back on it tomorrow maybe.
Thanks for all help offered so far!
