Hi everyone,

A friend is looking for a new car as he is a student and starts his work placement next year. He has about £2000 to spend (not including insurance) probably looking at a max of 1.6/1.8 engine for insurance reasons.

He is 19 and unfortunately has had a crash so it cant be too bad on insurance.

I have suggested an oldish Focus, a pug 106, a Fiat Punto, MX-5, etc... he is also a petrol head so would like something a bit nippy if possible and if anyone has any rear wheel drive sugesstions that fit the above criteria then even better!

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Might find one in budget:

If not, these are a laugh and cheap to run. Easy to swap in a V8 too biggrin

+1, Compact or coupe will probably be the most fun.

The 2litre Focus (Mk1) were only a group 8 insurance, I think the 1.6 is a group 5 or 6...

Can be picked up for pocket money too...

Buy a midget or a mgb. Classic insurance, easy to work on and maybe even tax exempt.

318i will be expensive to insure for him despite mediocre performance.

Classic or a kit is is really the only way to go if you are young and want something interesting.

Alfa 156. Seems to be a lot of 1.8's with tan leather around. He would get a nice one for £2000

Think Focus is a good shout. 306 maybe?

focus

but, depending on where he lives (insurance) it could be worth looking at the primera eGT or GT.

i always trot them out as a suggestion but for what they are (decent handling, not too bad, quite quick, cheapish to run, touring car) they're cheap to insure even if young and bereft of NCB...

better value than the almera.
