List your top 5 motoring journos from 2009 in order of preference, assessed purely on their 2009 work.

I go first:

1st place. Richard Meaden (DR and Evo)
2. Mark Hughes (Autosport)
3. Andrew Frankel (Autocar, Motorsport, GT Porsche)
4. Chris Harris (DR and Evo)

And here it gets really really difficult - tempted to go for Jethro Bovington (DR) or Steve Sutclif (Autocar) but in the end, fifth place goes to

5. Chris Chilton (Car)

For me?

1. Chris Harris - (DR + Evo) - A proper car enthusiast
2. Henry Catchpole - (Evo) - Has matured into a fantastic writer
3. Steve Sutcliffe - (Autocar) - Top Wheelman
4. Andrew Frankel - (Autocar + Others) - Has a great style.
5. Matt Rigby - (PH) - For getting the beers in at BTaP

hehe

Blimey, that's some thread resurrection! Surprised to see Sutcliffe on so many peoples lists. I don't doubt that he is a good driver, but his writing is 5hite.

In no particular order, I would go for Matt Master at BBC Top Gear, David Vivian for evo, Paul Horrell's column in Top Gear, Bill Thomas at Top Gear and Dickie Meaden in evo.

Despite its Mickey Mouse styling, I think Top Gear is slowly building one of the best stables of writers.

Paul Horrell is superb. I'm rather growing to like Nick Trott as well - he's less endowed with ego than the rest of the EVO team. Nigel Roebuck in MotorSport is the daddy though.

I'm always feeling like bumped into something home-brewed reading him.
For me the best is John Barker - always delicate and observant.

ETA Oh and 'm so much missing mid-noughties Richard Meaden writings, as he's now behind the backs of Harris and other new guys.

I was surprised to pick up some Aston Martin Racing literature from 3 years ago and discover that Trott had written it. He's obviously well established. I just find he has a degree more humility and less will to force his own character onto you as a reader than the other EVO guys.
