Anyone have experience of multiple versions of these?

Have found a MINT low-mile hi-spec MK4 R32, price slightly high but have cash and sure they will deal. We're talking circa 10k, which is bang on budget. Testing tomorrow, pretty much had my heart set on it until a friend sent me through a similar low-mile but low spec (no nav, leather etc.) Mk5 GTI DSg for the same money. Slightly less in fact (£9k). That slightly shocked me.

I should add, I have mild RSI and get quite bad knotted shoulder from manual gears sometimes when it's flared up, so DSG whilst not the dynamically optimum solution is quite ok with me.

Finally I then noticed slightly higher mile Mk5 R32 DSG for not a huge amount more cash. (£14.5k)

So - I've read all the evo mag reviews of each, watched all the top/fifth gear vids, and still none the wiser. Obviously ultimately I need to test all three. Although I can stretch to it I'd really rather stick within my £10,000 budget, so unless the R32 is really well worth the extra, it's between top spec very low mile and perfect colour/trim combo MK4 R32 V6 AWD or base spec MK5 GTi DSG.

Need to make a decision and buy something by the end of play on Monday as I cannot be carless over Christmas!!

Any and all feedback appreciated.

thanks
ed

Purely on a looks basis as I've not driven one the MK4 R32 is the one to have.
I've been following these for a while as I one day hope to own one and as far as I can see they're going to be a better bet in terms of depreciation than the MK5 GTI and R32.

I'm confident that the Mk V was teh car that signalled VW's return to brilliance from the edge of lardiness so would take the Mk V every time unless I was an effete poser. Wait... wink

I`d have a Mk5 GTI over a Mk4 R32 to be honest.

For reasons of pure dynamic ability yes, but for the purpose of putting a smile on your face every time you drive it (and make you laugh out loud every time you nail it in third gear down a motorway slip road), get the R32. Mk5 GTIs are like st in a field which would put me off...

I had a mk5 gti for 3 years and 50k only a coil pack let me down. Seats 4 in comfort, does 150mph, will do 30mpg easily and was cheap to service, mine was revo'd says to 255bhp, go on to gtiforum look up hurdy i think hes around 400bhp now.The only let down was the alloys on the 18s, the quality was crap.or get a edition 30 if you can.

The mk4 R32 seems more special. I would have one of those in blue.

The MK4 R32 is (IMO) a very disappointing car to drive, it doesn't feel particularly quick and feels heavy as all MK4 Golfs do.

It makes a nice noise though.

I would go for a MK5 everytime!!

Too many mk4 r32 copies going about, ruining the image for me. Plus theyre heavy and that 237 brake didnt really impress me when test driving one. Id imagine the gti would feel more sprightly and fun, especially with a remap to about 260 brake, one thing that you cant really do with the r32 is tune it very easily but with the gti, being turbo you can get a amd remap for 500 or so and get those extra ponys..

Although prices seem to be easing slightly, a £9k MkV GTi probably won't be in top condition - good ones still go for 2 or 3 grand more than that.

LOL ^_^

FYI the MK4 I found sold yesterday. Gutted, I pretty much had my heart set on it.

It looked *immaculate* on the pics on their site.

The MkV gti looks fine, but I really wanted leather as I often get in the car a bit muddy from mountainbiking etc.

Your maths is about as good as mine when cars and budgets are involved!

I went out car shopping a good few years back with a budget of £8,000. Three hours later I`d spent £12,000 on a Corrado.

Audi S3 DSG has the positives of all that are mentioned the only downside would be the price.

VERY interesting to hear a respected racer like Plato talking about the DSG like this:

Also a nice little cutaway of the gears changing cogs too. Amazing.
