I am looking to buy a vechile i can use for work and for leisure use and have come across a shogun sport warrior.

The guy im dealing with says that for a quick sale i can have it cheap, below market value, its cheap because he wants to buy a car he has his eye on next week and hence needs the cash.

Anyway i was about to get on a plane up to scotland when he mentioned the car is actually in his mums name and she is on holiday, but its not a problem as she has signed the v5 anyway as hes selling it for her.

The above worries me.

The next thing is the car is on a private plate, he has been to the dvla today and got it swapped over to the original plate but obviously it will take a few days for the new v5 to arrive.
Can he do a reg transfer even though its not in his name> again sounds suspicious.

He wants to do the deal this sunday.
Im worried that i,ll be taking the new keeper supplement for a car with the wrong reg on it.

Basically im concerned that even though i,ll have this new supplement a receipt, both sets of keys etc they could turn round and say its been stolen as the registered keeper is not there at the time of sale, im also worried about the goings on with the new v5 being sent to his address because of the plate change.Again they could say its stolen.

I hope all the above makes sense, it seems a bit confusing to me, he doesnt really want to wait until his mum returns because he only said i can have it for the agreed price for a quick sale and if he waits he can get more for it.

What do i do? i would rather wait for her to get back by which time they will have the correct v5.

Please, please don't buy this car. If it smells quite this dodgy...

Worst case scenarios...

1. Mum gets back from holiday and discovers darling son has sold her car without her knowledge. Car is "Stolen", gets recovered and you're left trying to get purchase price from son.

2. Car is stolen, on false plates. Seller has got hold of V5 or produced one.

Really, don't do it. All of the pressure he's putting on is designed to fluster, it's not like he will sell it to anyone else. Run a mile.

If there's any risk at all, don't do it.

He could well have broken into the owners house whilst they were on their hols and basically found everything that he needs to make a few very easy £££££'s.

If in doubt walk. Don'd be rushed. Trust your instincts.

Rule: Don't buy a car without the proper V5 from the person at the address to which the V5 relates (unless a dealer).

Thanks guys, just as i suspected.

I will say to him i,m happy to wait until his mums home and then buy it.

Above all else i dont understand why he is selling his mums car and pocketing the money, he says he has bought her another car but do people really buy their mums nice new cars all the time? I cant see it except for the wealthy maybe.

Jappa,

Avoid like the plague. It's a buyers market out there, and there's plenty for sale smile

Jappa, indeed - walk away. S'not worth the risk.

Hell, I've had some geezer trying to flog me a dodgy looking MX5 all week!

There's nothing that he is doing that's isn't possible - I myself always sell my parents and gfs cars for them, and I have also sold motors on without the V5 due to having transferred a plate off (I must look very trustworthy wink) and filled the V5 in when it's arrived.

Actually, Orb does have a fair point.

We're all being pretty cynical here, and perhaps with good reason but still, if it's a good deal, there's no harm in doing a little digging to ensure it's all legit.

Sounds possibly iffy. Youre buying a car but without confirmation that the owner is selling the car! The signature on the V5 may be false.

Regarding the plate change, this may not be a major issue, as long as you have the signed V5 with the new reg shown. Alternativly, insist that the plate swap happens AFTER you have bought the car. The last 3 cars I've bought have had private plates which have subsequenly been transferred at a later date, [would point out that in each case, this was handled by the selling garage though].

In summary, as previously suggested, wait for the Mother to re-appear on the scene.
