To cut a long story short, I find a car I like on ebay.

Put the details into my insurance company's website and it returns a reasonable quote for my age, £400.

Few days later I arrange to buy the car, pick it up, drive it back home as my existing policy is comprehensive with drive other cars cover.

Ring up my insurance company to change vehicles and they want an additional £450 for the privelege.

fk that I say, I did a quote on your website and a new policy was less than that, so it can't be that much to change over!

Go back to the website, I put the exact same details in as I did a few days ago and the quote is now returned at £1200. In the time it took me to buy my car, it's gone up £800 to insure for no reason I can discern. Like a fool I didn't save the initial quote and have no proof it existed, so now I'm stuck with a motor I can't insure and a considerably lighter wallet. Any ideas PH?

not being funny but are you sure you put all the correct details in? maybe you made a genuine mistake. if not then this is truly outrageous

Normally quotes are valid for a certain period of time - did it not email you the price at the end? If it was done on confused.com then shirley you can sign back in to get it or similar??

Apart from the obvious one - cancel your policy, take the hit on not accumulating NCD and the early repayment amount, and take out a new one elsewhere - afraid not.

Without a saved quote you've got little chance of them honouring the online quote.

Sounds odd that it's jumped so much so quickly, though:

- are you sure you entered exactly the right details the first time?
- how is your insurance company's quote compared to other insurers?

Had this happen many times. I've got a quote on a car online, not saved the quote, gone back and done it again and they suddenly want a lot more. I've had quotes double in the past, I think they just make it up as they go along.

The same problem happened to a friend of a friend. He got a quote for a 200sx and turned out to be a reasonable one. So he buys the car, phones up the insurance company and what do you know, they've doubled the quote. Truely outrageous!

You'll find that only covers you driving cars that are insured in someone elses name, ie you drove it back without insurance.

Sorry to add insult to injury!

Quotes are usually valid for 30 days, and confused.com saves your details so you should be able to go back and get the old price.

Before I bought my car I done a quote with my current insurer and they quoted me 2.8k per year (that's 1k more than the most competitive quote i got but i wanted to finish the year to get my 4th NCD)
so I ring them back and accept the quote. They tell me the car's engine and my age are "unacceptable" and they will nto insure me.

I tell them that it is "unacceptable" that they quote me before i buy the car and now and now that i actually have it i cannot insure it with them and am forced to go elswhere and lose my nearly ompleted 4th NCD.

Got the manager on the phone. the manager got the underwriters involved. They checked their tapes and confirmed i was indeed quoted so they said they have no choice but to insure me, however wanted me to be advised that once the policy is up they will not be renewing it.

Try that perhaps?

I've double and triple checked and I definitely inputted the exact same details, both times. The vehicle is the same, all my personal details are the same, everything.

I checked the box that said 'Do not send me any information via email or phone' so I didn't receive any confirmation. Comparison sites are all proving expensive, however I really wanted to stick with this company as it is the only one to offer me drive other cars cover on a comprehensive policy due to my age. (20 y/o)

Car is a 1995 Land Rover Discovery 300tdi. I've currently got my Defender 110 insured with them for £470, and the Disco was the same price to insure when I checked before buying it!

What a ballache, the guy in the callcentre was very sympathetic but said he couldn't do anything about the price rise at all. Looks like I'll have to be selling the motor as soon as I get the V5 frown

I used comparison websites to try and get a quote. Got quoted about £500 by several companies, when I rung them up, the quotes had gone up, at least one companys quote rose to £1800!
I think the comparison websites are a joke, giving you initial low quotes to try and reel you in.
I ended up going through a broker and got insurance for £520.

Yeah, I'm not sure on the no insurance bit as at the time I didn't own the car. At what point do you take ownership of the car, when you sign the logbook? When the DVLA receives it and updates their records? When you get the V5 in your name?

It's one big grey area, and I did the quote through their own website, not a comparison site. So i literally have no proof the quote ever existed.

It's no biggie, as all you get is a £160 fine for driving without insurance, mot and tax apparently...

I got one the other day offering to beat my current price on the ER500 as given by H&R

Went through all the details, for some reason it took him 20 minutes ffs

Anyway, he came back as proud as punch and said "Mr Downey: How does a quote of £864.67 sound? That's TPF&T at 5k miles per year on a new rider with an ER500 and no security"

To which I burst out laughing and told him H&R did me a quote of £271 with a low excess rofl

True!

Otherwise those of use with more than one car wouldn't bother insuring the other 3.

Just to let you know to drive other cars they can not be owned by you and have to be insured by the owner as well for your insurance to cover you.

Does the driving other cars clause also exclude "use for trade"?
