I know that I should not post this here but there is no forum on PH for Vauxhalls apart from the performance stuff hehe I wonder why.

Sorry but this is from my brother who is not a PHer of any kind, he just drives.

He tells me that the other day, his smooth riding 5 year old, 50K mile Astra suddenly felt like it was being driven across an off road car park.

It now judders and shudders when he drives it, so he has had his local garage look at it (who sound like cowboys) and they are puzzled.

The shocks are fine and he always checks his tyre pressures.

Any ideas folks as he lives to far away for me to check it.

Ta.

Chassis damage? Hit any really big pot holes lately?

What do you mean by 'judders and shudders'

What's that over bumps, or lurching when he tries to accelerate?

I presume they have checked the tyres, in particular for a bulge in the sidewall, if it has suddenly some on out of nowhere...

Yeah they have checked the tyres and he describes it as driving over rough ground but when on smooth roads. Springs and shocks OK or so his local garage has said.

Bit hard when you are just a driver to describe stuff over the phone but I'll call him back tonight to see if I can get more details.

Thanks so far.

Sounds like it might be driveshaft related - it's obviously something causing a vibration through being propelled forward. Checked the wheelnuts are all done up?

I thought maybe someone had come up with an alternative to being 'murdered out'.

judders and shudders...
Could be the dreaded EGR valve!
This will cause hesitation and juddering like its about to stall. Try cleaning it out with carb cleaner, replace it or blank it off - not sure about the last one, a lot of Astra owners swear by it but on the other hand...!
I replaced mine (found one for £35 off ebay) and it cured my stall/judder problems.
Also check the breather pipes from the head to the inlet manifold, they get clogged up with slimy gunk - again clean liberally with carb cleaner.

Unless it is suspension....

Just phoned him but he's adamant that its not an engine thing. As he describes it, it seems to be the same effect of hitting Sports on the PASM in my old 987, except it's just a bog standard Astra diesel.

His bloke at the local garage drove it and said that it was a rough ride but there was nothing wrong with the shocks. Very weird.
