Hi all, a (hopefully) quick question. The tax on my Clio is coming up for renewal, but the car is still laid up for the winter and hence not insured. I have an active policy for my other car - can I add the Clio on that for a couple of weeks and use that policy document to obtain the tax?

I'm not sure about the above, but I know you can tax a car using temporary insurance from the likes of Dayinsure/Daycover etc.

Of course, you could delare the Clio SORN if you aren't using it and it isn't stored on a public road.

You can't.

If you could, pikeys would buy a day's insurance, tax the car, and then not bother paying premiums for the rest of the year.

You can't do it.

Thanks for the responses: I guess I'll just have to pay up and hope for good weather!

The reason I believe you can is the FAQ section here:

http://www.daycover.com/TempCover/tcvTxtFaqs.aspx

According to that you can.

Edited to add: However, in support of Vesuvius, the answer to question 74 here suggests you can't:

http://www.dayinsure.com/carfaq.aspx#78

I was under the impression that as long as insurance is valid on the day the tax disc comes into force, that's fine.

Also, as far as I know a certificate the customer has downloaded themselves shouldn't be acceptable (although I doubt many POs would realise). However, Daycover are able to provide a 'proper' certificate for an extra charge - maybe that could explain the FAQ discrepancy above.

Wouldn't it be wise to insure it anyway, it could get nicked from the garage.

I have "laid up" cover for that eventuality...

Why don't you just SORN it? then when it comes out just pay the tax then.

On the SORN thing - I've never done it before - how does it work? Do I just get an MOT and tax when I'm ready to use it?

You're not supposed to, but i've done it thrice when i've been at different ends of the country to the cover note. The Post Office people generally won't notice, or in one case, assume that the policy to and from dates were a mistype.

Yep, same here, it was a free 7 day policy from Norwich Union.

Me too. 7 day freebie.

I still can't see why you wouldn't SORN it on principle though? Why pay a tax that you don't have to?

Apply for SORN and then as far as I know, simply tax it again as normal with the required docs.

You can. i've done it for my last car. i was selling it but in my haste i cancelled the policy on it and took another one out on my new car.

The tax was about to run out on the car that i was selling so i got 3 days temporary cover (about £20) and taxed it online.

You only need insurance for the day the tax comes into force. make sure that the temporary insurance cover you get updates the insurance database so you are covered.
