New Gordon Murray supercar set for Monterey

GMA's Special Vehicles department blew minds last year - will history repeat itself?

You know Monterey Car Week is already starting to heat up when the teaser pictures start to resemble an ‘80s-era Cadbury Flake advert. Quite what Gordon Murray Special Vehicles is going for here with the net curtains effect isn’t immediately clear, but probably it doesn’t matter - let’s not forget that last year the manufacturer’s new GMSV division practically stole the show with its S1 LM, a five-unit, don’t-call-us-we’ll-call-you homage to the F1 LM.

This year it apparently intends to go one better. Or at least repeat the feat with another new and very limited edition supercar. Those equipped with more cultured eyeballs than PH possesses might like to venture a guess on what exactly the new model is referencing (its shape is certainly redolent of the McLaren F1 - though you could reasonably say that about the GMA T.50, too). Given that it shares its air duct placement and roof scoop with the S1 LM, a road-going variant of its previous show-stopper may well be in the offing. But we're open to wilder (and weirder) educated guesses.

"It is always a pleasure to return to California, and I am looking forward to sharing our latest Special Vehicles creation with everyone attending The Quail and enthusiasts around the world,” commented Professor Gordon Murray, without giving much away. “We have been working on something very special – I can't wait for the covers to come off."

Of course, GMA has very good reason to tramp back over old ground: when one example of the S1 LM (a car not actually built at the time remember) went under the hammer last November, it fetched 15 million quid, a record for a brand-new car. And on the basis that it feature a bespoke 4.3-litre V12 developing 720hp - and looked like it did - we could hardly argue with the buyer’s logic. Will history repeat itself? Dario Franchitti’s quote suggests you shouldn’t bet against it.

“Since the S1 LM and Le Mans GTR debuted here last year, we’ve made major progress in their development, and the new model will soon join them on the road to production. I’ve loved driving the Le Mans GTR and beginning the process of dialling in the Driving Perfection that gives every Gordon Murray supercar its distinctive appeal.”

Those covers come off on Friday, when it will share the limelight with the Experimental Prototype (i.e. XP1) version of the Le Mans GTR, another Special Vehicle effort. You know where to come for full coverage.

How many times can they milk the F1 design before the novelty wears off?

Given what F1's and GMA cars resell for, I think you're in for a long wait.

I'm done with it now. But I don't mind letting Gordy ring as much as possible from his success. Carol Shelby is still doing that and he died over 14 years ago.

But will the car be fun to drive over long distances? Harry Metcalf bemoaned the noise in the GMA car he drove and there's no luggage space either. They are all collectors' wet dreams frankly: fast but ultimately pointless.

Never really been a fan of his cars, but this does look lovely. I listened to this video and didn’t appreciate that he’d had a cancer scare. Looks like he got through it which is wonderful news. He sounds like a very intelligent and articulate chap, hope he has no more health scares!

Fifty years after adding the fan, GM breaks convention again by fitting his supercar with a sail.

About time to accept it won’t be an F1 and never will be, especially with an engine that gives you ear ache.
I’m all for revs and V12’s but it’s like a mosquito in your ear at 3am that thing.

I’d heard McLaren are working on an f1 NA revival project so will be interesting to see when that pops up.

Isn't that what the T33 is for. The T50 is the all guns blazing super dooper car.

I don't think it was meant to be, although the T50 does have 3 seats.

No idea what the V12 sounds like from inside, but when I heard a T50 given some revs it sounded awesome from outside. cloud9

Nothing like a mosquito in the ear!

And it was proper N/A sound with no fake pops, bangs and wet-farts.

Some of the comments here are somewhat disingenuous to what Murray has achieved. You don’t get it! Just understand that his philosophy is about creating the most amazing hypercar by developing traditional tech as far as it can go. No batteries to power the thing, an amazing lightweight V12 engine, and handling to that is state of the art. To moan about the noise is laughable, as you just don’t understand! When you have heard one of his cars, inside or out, then you will revel in the most amazing reminder that this really is what us petrolheads applaud. Oh, and the quality of the engineering is totally amazing.

Oh, and I forgot to say, the engine has no turbos, and is very lightweight. This is another of Gordon Murray’s important philosophies. It is the purest of hypercars.

While there are Billionaires wanting the latest and the greatest, the gravy train will keep on churning them out.

More Hypercars are just soo boring. Never read about them anymore.

I'd be more impressed if he came up with a genuine 911 rival. But, you can't make a £1m profit on each one of them.
