Insurance for carers

Not sure how best to manage this: My mum is in her 90's, lives alone, and has stopped driving. She now needs a live-in carer, who also drives her to doctor's appt's, friends, etc.

Up to now, we've been able to just add the carer as named driver on an existing policy and they've borrowed a family member's car. But, we now need to buy a car primarily for this - and arrange insurance.

To complicate matters the agency carers change every couple of months, and typically don't have UK licenses.

One option is to just take out a policy in my name, but the car isn't going to be kept at my address, and I'm concerned about 'fronting' issues.

Are there specialised insurers who handle this, or any better way of managing it?

Another option is to try a broker like Howdens ( the old A plan ) , iirc their Thatcham office was usually the best for private motor.
If you bought the car and insured it in your name as the RK but then added the carers as needed this wouldn’t be fronting because you would be explaining your needs and they would be arranging the cover accordingly.
Fronting is only when you state you are the MD and it transpires it’s then the child etc ( usually when fronting actually occurs ) that is driving all the time.

Where do you recruit the carers? Could you make it the agency's problem to provide a vehicle and to do the insurance and driving licence checks (plus visas and Right To Work checks)?

The agency handles visas, checks etc., but couldn't help with car insurance.

It looks like we've got two options that work:

• Any driver policy, with only requirement being that driver has a full UK license even if not resident. (Fish Insurance were v. helpful)
• Named driver policy, changing named driver every time we change carers. (Adrian Flux : cheaper, but admin fees each time)

The potential issue of 'fronting' and the car being kept a long way from the RK's address didn't seem to matter, as I was disclosing the intended use from the outset.

None of the price comparison sites were any use as they either required named drivers to be UK residents, or didn't allow any driver policies.
