For those that have been in the unfortunate position - or work within the business...

Once a car is deemed to be beyond economical repair I have been informed that I will now be sent 2 seperate cheques (how 1970's!!) totalling the agreed value.

one from the insurance company and one from the salvage company.

Does anybody have any experience of timescales for these to arrive - my car is actually at the salvage location and has been for 3-4 days now.

Thanks

That's odd.

I had a total loss claim in 2022 and my insurers paid me (straight into my bank account). I can't imagine why somebody else would be paying me part of the settlement.

(My car went to a salvage company and they sold it by auction, but that was separate - and way after - I'd been paid).
Once the payment amount was agreed, I was paid very quickly

On your banking app within the account you should be able to "Pay in a cheque" the app will use your phone camera to take an image of the cheque thumbup

Not all banks/building societies have this ability.

What bank is it? I’ve had all sorts of fun with cheques, including the apps rejecting them

And it depends how much the cheque is for as well - my bank has a limit of £3000 iirc.

When my car was deemed an economic write off, I got paid direct from the body shop/salvage company direct once they had the Log book (I actually went to their premises to sort this out as it was close by) and the larger balance was paid direct to my bank account within a couple of days from memory.

Hmmm, so Virgin money have a single cheque limit of 1000 and a daily milit of 5000, both of which are less than the cheques im expecting - so using the app is a non starter sadly...

Erm, yeah, good luck with that. The Clydesdale Bank aren’t exactly at the forefront of digital technology.

Looks like you need a paying in slip, hopefully you’ve been issued with a book of these, it looks like a cheque book. Usually there’s a stock of envelopes for different banks behind the counter, normally you need to write the sort code and account number on the outside of this & seal the cheque and paying in slip inside. I’ve had issues paying in RBS cheques where it’s not clear what type of pay-in slip they’ll accept and whether they’re needed at all. You should be issued with a Horizon receipt at least and I’ve never (touch wood) had money fail to reach the account.

If it’s a significant sum of money I think I’d be tempted to take a few hours off work and drive to the nearest Virgin Money branch though. They are a bit thin on the ground these days unfortunately though Nationwide are claiming they won’t close any for the next few years.
Alternatively, you could try visiting a post office banking hub on a day there’s a member of Virgin Money staff visiting https://www.postoffice.co.uk/bankinghubs

Hi - I'm nearly 60 so totally remember paying in books/slips :-)

I'm thinking that the post office will be my best bet...

thanks!

How odd, when the insurer wrote off my late fathers car it was a direct bank transfer from the salvage company. Two cheques what a p.i.t.a.!

Yep, as soon as I agreed the value I had the money. Then I just had to send a pic of the V5 then destroy it. Too easy!

That sounds bizarre to me. confused

When my car became a Cat N in 2023 I got a bank transfer from Hastings. Nothing from the salvage company though because I kept it!

The only cheques I've received for years were a couple from DVLA for putting a car on SORN. I paid them into a Barclays account at the Post Office but I believe they only do it for the "big 4" banks - they couldn't do it for my Nationwide current account.

Maybe you'd need to take it to a branch of your bank, assuming you can find one.
