Ford Supertruck claims Goodwood shootout crown

Romain Dumas at the wheel for another Ford EV win at FOS - almost two seconds faster than anyone else

Ford has claimed another Goodwood Festival of Speed Shootout win, the second in succession for the triple motor, 1,419hp Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck. Romain Dumas was on driving duty once more, as he had been for previous SuperTruck triumphs (at Pikes Peak) and spectacular shootout efforts (as in the SuperVan from a few years back). The victorious time was 43.23 seconds; some way off the overall record set by the McMurtry, which went under 40 seconds, though it was comfortably ahead of the rest of the pack. The next closest competitor was Scott Speed in Subaru’s Project Midnight, at 45.03.

As is often the way when watching these chunky Ford commercial vehicle concepts with preposterous electric power, the SuperTruck made for some spectacle at Goodwood. Even on the livestream the sight of something so physically large showing so little concern for braking points and apexes was something staggering to witness. While fast EVs are no longer as shocking as they once were, when one is purpose built for the task at hand and offers up a four-figure power output for the task it can still prove very silly indeed. For some kind of context, a 2011 Holden Commodore V8 Supercar could only achieve 48.35 with the current BTCC champion Jake Hill at the wheel, and a 911 GT3 Cup could only two-wheel itself to 46.74 with Hames Wallis at the wheel.

Certainly it wasn’t like Speed in the Subaru wasn’t trying, either. He cut the dry, arid grass of the Duke of Richmond’s driveway like it was a special stage; it was almost rallycross, his combination of tarmac and dirt. Even going almost half a second faster than yesterday wasn’t enough to surpass the fast Frenchman and Ford’s crazy pick up. With the dust and the hay being kicked up thanks to the weather, the SuperVan’s run was more like one of those wild European hill climb vids than the Festival of Speed. They’ll be going for the hat trick come 2026…

I’d reckon I’m closer to waking up next to Shania Twain than that is being close to an F150…

My last time was 2017 and after watching this year's shootout on the live stream you can really tell the world is broke. Must be one of the worse shootouts I have ever seen.

Is there anything in their arsenal that would beat the McMurtry?

Unfortunately, it's stuff like this which is forcing the barriers being higher and deeper than ever before...

Crikey, the energy contained in that mass going that speed is insane.

Old fart, but I miss the good old days of FoS before the excess commercialism and restricted access/viewing.

Me too.

I went to the 2nd FOS and as it got busier I started going on Friday, but I haven't been for years now. In the early years I'd see John Surtees and Stirling Moss in the paddock, but it feels like it has become a victim of its' success sadly.

That EV has absolutely nothing in common with an F150 - at least the original Ford Supervan looked like a Transit!

Holden Commodore and Holden Monaro were the highlights of the shootout for me and all after watching an ex Paul Radisich Ford Falcon racing at Croft. It was a V8 Supercars nostalgia weekend. Lovely.

It’s you that is missing out. EV’s at Goodwood are a small percentage compared to what’s on the road. As time goes on these will be the only places you can see 75 years of motoring being driven hard.

True of many sports, they have to wring every last penny out of it, pushing the envelope even further, it’s what the public wants.

But why complain;

Up and down the country, loons are, thrashing their car down a forest track, coaxing it up a muddy incline, spanking it up a mountain, chucking round a set of cones or simply polishing their P&J in a pub car park.

If you don’t like the commercialism of FOS, go and view one of the many alternatives.

I’d rather watch Colin giving his Imp the beans at Barbon, than some hypercar at Goodwood, but each to their own.

They are probably right, its what the public wants, otherwise there wouldn’t be a market for it.

That’s why it’s a truck, not a car, razzamatazz!
