Morning All,
Got stopped by Police on my way home last night as I showed up as no insurance cover. They asked me for proof. Logged in on insurance company website to find there were no documents for my vehicle even though I had paid the premium in full and was sure I had sorted the cover back in August 2024!
Luckily found an email which confirmed my premium and my car registration so police were satisfied and I was on my way. I called Admiral this morning and it seems that my payment went through but there was no record of my car being added to the multicar policy, effectively meaning I have been driving around without insurance since August!

Not sure what my options are, obviously first port of call would be to get cover so I can continue driving it, but should I report to FCA? compensation? put the money already paid to next lot of cover (supposed to end next month). Ideas welcome. Awaiting a call back from Admiral whilst they "look into it".

Get them to add the car to the policy, and move on. You're not out of pocket and you haven't suffered any loss.

Will do ! Just never happened before, they have provided cover and put in formal complaint. I will wonder what could have happened if I had an accident

It would have been paid if it’s as you say.

Complaints are reportable to the FCA technically anyway so just let them deal with it. Stuff goes wrong. Sounds like it’s being sorted as cover has been provided. So you haven’t been uninsured.

Perhaps you were also “ lucky “ in that the Police accepted an email as evidence of Insurance which you could easily have subsequently cancelled.
Mistakes happen ( seems quite an omission by Admiral though ) and only moral of the story is probably to check their portal in future.

Had the same sort of thing earlier this year, but got a letter in the post rather than being stopped. Had an interesting chat to my Insurance Company as they advised me it was down to me to ensure my car was on the MID database the Police use to check for insurance - I politely told them (I work for a big Insurer btw] its the Insurers / brokers job to do that, not the insured, that's part of the reason we pay them to insure us. One quick check with the guys boss, one apology and all now sorted

You were quite lucky.

A common scam is to pay, get the certificate of insurance and then cancel and get the most or all of the premium back.

Police typically don't accept at the roadside anything that isn't on the MID database.

Why would you need compo? You're not out of pocket

Sounds like someone at the insurer made a mistake, we're all human, accept it and move on imo

Agreed. I had a similar issue where we changed some details on our insurance which needed a new policy being issued. A few months later I relalised I'd not seen the new documents.

When I rang they said the old policy was cancelled, but the new one wasn't properly activated (they couldn’t see why not) so was in limbo.

The first thing they said was they would have covered us, so we were never without insurance regardless of what the MID might have said.

It's a minor admin cock up with no financial loss or suffering.

Thanks for the replies, yes I am covered now until next renewal at no cost and they have initiated their internal complaints process to investigate what went wrong. No need for me to take it any further!

When I take a new policy, I print off the certificate of insurance and stick in the glovebox.

Title should read ‘I forgot to check my insurance documents’ (as is usually requested).

If the car was showing as not insured on MID, then the OP producing a hard copy certificate would have made no difference. Refer to Baldchap's post above.

But under the circumstances outlined in Baldchap's post, there WOULD be an entry on MID to show the inception and subsequent cancellation of the policy.

OP was subject of a very common administrative cock up, it would have been sorted as he described at the roadside
