Usually you have a go at disputing it, then if they charge your card, claim with your excess insurer for a refund.

Returned a vehicle to Sixt in Majorca with a broken tail light and a small adjacent dent/scratch ( both of which I pointed out to them)

3 months later they sent me a bill for Euro 280 which I paid.

Pretty painless and efficient

Who was the excess insurance with? Typically they don’t want to know until you’ve been charged but go to the website and try to start the process, it will soon tell you.

I had a Hertz charge and through similar. I used Eversure and it was as above. Hertz cancelled the charge after I challenged it so it never got that far
