Car Tin Worm in the 21st Century! - What do you know..?

We all know of tin worm in 20th century production motor cars - Lancia being the one that springs to my mind....!

This thread concentrates on those produced from the year 2000 onwards. I'm hoping this thread may develop and be of use to PHer's when they venture out in to the market place looking to buy.....

S550 mustang, front wing and bonnet are notorious amounts the SMUK forum. Wife’s car got done once in our ownership at 2 years old. The new owner reported back that it’s been done again at 5 year point. Ours is not the only one by a long shot

The new MG ZS EV SUV had reports of minor corrosion setting in within 12 months. Cheap Chinese build quality for you. I'm sure it'll improve in short order. It may have already done so.

As I started this thread, I ought to mention my 2018 2.0 MX-5 ND2 SportNav+. It's largely a toy and doesn't see much bad weather, which may help as we all know how earlier '5's sometimes fare....! Sure they'll not be perfect, but hopefully "improved"!

Particularly:

1) Any Merc from the early to mid noughties.
2) Many or even most Japanese cars - Almera Mk2, MX5s, Civic Mk7, etc all rusted terribly

Mazda are absoluty shocking for rust even into the 2010 look under any mx5 you see some shocking rust showing not sure on the nd but heard they are showing signs of it.

Worst I’ve had was a 2013 Maserati Grancabrio - some steel covers behind the headlights were toast - just thin badly spray painted sheetmetal that were turning into teabags. It’s well known the subframes are renowned for disintegrating too - mine were ok but there were perfect water traps ‘designed’ into each side of the front subframe so water would just sit there if the car got wet underneath.

Jaguars.

My parents’ 2004 X Type and XJ have both fallen foul of rusty subframes.

F Types appear to have subframe issues too.

Manufacturers generally seem to make brake lines out of steel, which corrodes.

Mk5 golf had rusty front wings - VW would replace them under FOC iirc.

E9x BMWs can suffer badly, subframes and mounts. Some body parts prone, arches and tailgates.

MG ZS/Rover 45 are absolutely terrible for rotting front floors out - there's an inbuilt water trap which causes them to corrode from the inside.

Iirc it was early Indian made Dusters, they then switched production to Europe which solved the problem

Rear subframe on the Mk2 Audi TT can suffer. Mine's got a little surface rust (2008).

Yup, NDs aren’t any better than NCs, they’re just newer. Rust really lets Mazdas down, it’s not just MX-5s that suffer it’s all of them.

Renaults are surprisingly corrosion resistant, my family run a fleet of shed Megane's and Scenics (between 18 and 13 years old) and there has not been so much as an advisory for corrosion. Even the brake pipes seem immune which is something the German brands can't manage.

All are on the original exhausts as well.

2007 Merc C55 (W203)
- all four arches done by PO and done again by me five years later
- rear subframe rusty, refurbished by PO

The subframe is a known issue on other cars on this platform (R171) and the successor W204 C-Class (perhaps more so).

2021 Citroen C4
- all four doors rusted along the inside lower edge at 3yo. Citroen replaced all doors for free under goodwill, it's a known issue with early cars. Some cars have had the tailgate rust similarly.

There's an issue with paint on aluminium panels which is known on quite a few such cars including A110s, it's a slightly different problem from corrosion as it won't progress to perforation or an MoT failure, just looks ugly.

Ain’t that the truth. This i currently parked up in a bubble until i can afford the rust related restoration
