Good evening everyone.
like many I suppose? I always want more speed, the cars come one after the other and the fast cars of yesterday seem (normal). I always want to "feel" faster to the detriment sometimes of a pleasant engine and handling.
Is there a level where you always feel faster or do we not want to increase the power?

Maybe, but you don’t get anywhere much quicker. A fast, powerful car will always get left behind a smaller car whose driver has no regard to safety, gaps, stopping distances, etc.

Decrease weight. Caterham for example you really don’t need too much power in those.

You will also feel like you are going faster, even if you're not.

Have you driven a Caterham or Lotus?

I'm fed up with this desire for always more power, faster. in the end the power and torque figures of the cars used are rather high and I would like more... I find it excessive

I used to drive American V8s as dailies. You get used to power quite quickly.

Having a Corvette Z06 as a garage queen alongside a normal car made the fast car always seem fast. It was the same with motorbikes, I had a CBR1000 whose speed became very normal.

Nowadays, I have two Fiat Pandas alongside the Mustang and MX5 and actually enjoy driving them just as much. Call it an antidotal, character over power.

before I drove v6 na and I liked it then very quickly I found it slow. then moved on to the big v8, very fun and super pleasant then although it was not slow I wanted more. then I switched to the old school turbo. very fun and fast! but not for very long time because despite the idiotic power delivery, I was never a big fan of the lag and it ended up bothering me. I wanted to ride with a supercharged but I don't like the noise they make at all.

This is why I prefer to drive an NA engine on a daily basis and in general.
the turbos are fun but quickly boring. the big v8 seems to hypnotize you in a rather unique way. response, torque, sound... character

However, I still wanted more

Performance has always been less important to me than steering and controls feel, handling and engine note.

I’ve never once wished my 996 4S was quicker and yet it would get left behind by modern hot hatches in a straight line. But on a road, the limiting factor is primarily safe speed for the conditions and of course trying to avoid penalties!

I guess one gets used to a level of performance and you crave that hit.

Not sure what to suggest other than finding a car which brings joy to you in some other way than how fast it accelerates.

I enjoy having power, and I'd definitely rather have it than not.

I recently hired a 4 cylinder 1.5 petrol VW Tiguan with only a 128bhp, and I couldn't wait to get back behind the wheel of my F82 M4 for example. I do still however enjoy driving my Caterham though, and that only has 140bhp to be fair to it.

I'm definitely like that. Having that Tiguan for a week with only 128bhp wasn't much fun for me, and I found it incredibly stressful/dangerous to drive at first because of the lack of shove, however I did get used to it in the end though(I drove 500 miles in it).

140bhp Caterham isn't that far off the power to weight ratio of your M4 though.

I'm always wondering whether or not to remap my F56 JCW. In reality it has a nice amount of power and torque, it never feels slow in any way, but not so fast that you can't give it a few beans without being banned outright. I imagine it will be great fun remapped, but I think there's a possibility you could turn it into more of a point and squirt car, as it might become too quick to fully enjoy on the road, and at the same time, higher wear and tear on the car and possibly blow the engine.

So I'm not sure. However, I'll bet you a pint that I probably end up doing it anyway laugh

However, it'll be the last thing I do to it, concentrating on the handling / chassis / brakes first.

That may reveal more about your driving than about the car?
