fuel cost in UK…
Discussion
I am planning a trip to the UK in a couple of months and was thinking of renting a car. How much does fuel cost in the UK? Did a web search for fuel around the world and UK was 1.71 or so a liter. Or about $6.84 US dollars. Does that sound about right for your fuel costs. I paid $3.09 for 87 octane and $4.48 for 93 octane a couple of days ago. Is the fuel always this expensive in the UK and the rest of Europe?
£1.71 is what you might pay at Motorway services, they are a rip-off and avoid them if you can.
Here is a good site with current road fuel prices:

I have a hedging system, which deals with varying petrol prices.
Petrol cost goes up and my oil shares increase in value and vice versa. Simple.
Consequently, I never look at the price of petrol.
Just for you though, I have looked at a receipt dated 31 October 2024.
Shell 95 Octane 10% Ethanol = £1.379 per litre.
It used to be always measured in gallons, but for marketing purposes it looks much cheaper in litres. -
If that is more expensive than in your country, then it will be because of tax.
Would you believe, when buying fuel, our government charge tax on the tax.
A fuel duty tax of something around 59 pence per litre, then on that 59 pence, 20% Value Added Tax (VAT) is charged. Tax on tax.
This Country is tax mad, that is why so many people don't work very hard, or even bother to work at all.
Tax on employment income, plus an extra tax called National Insurance.
Then when we spend what might be left, there is 20% VAT charged.
Local councils charge a huge tax for living in a house/home.
If you manage to save any of your taxed income, there is tax on interest, tax on dividends, tax on any financial gains.
When popping your cloggs, there is inheritance tax at 40%.
Some people do better by just claiming state benefits, but the economy needs business entrepreneurs.
We might not object if the government spent the tax money wisely. Huge contracts are set up, then the final bill might be 4 times the original estimate. Contractors love government contracts. A current example is a new railway line from London to Birmingham. We were told you could get to Birmingham 20 minutes earlier. When some half wit eventually realised, passengers could just catch an existing train 20 minutes earlier, they changed the justification to, it will relieve congestion.
Have your fillings checked before your trip. Motorways are quite well maintained, but many other roads are in a shocking state. Potholes galore.
Enjoy your visit.
As already mentioned, never buy fuel at motorway services.

I paid £1.289 a litre a few days back at an ASDA.
High prices are around £1.45 ish at the same station.
I wouldn't worry about fuel breaking the bank on a UK holiday. Cars are a bit more efficient over here and traffic is generally better... Especially if you're not driving at peak times.

122.9p at Costco yesterday.
Not a member, and that’s probably over 25 miles each way. Hardly worth it.Never will you see such a collection of obese turds anywhere else.

Saw petrol for £129.9 today, can't remember the last time I saw it that cheap
£1.26.5 at the Esso on the A194 going into South Shields and has been for quite a while, most others have gone back up to £1.30ish.My wallet is certainly appreciating the respite, £950 a month income and 20mpg are not a happy pair!
Just filled up with petrol at an Asda in Glasgow at 129.9p/litre. Tesco nearby is the same as is the Jet. Esso is 133.9p.
Been like this for several weeks. Been years since it was this low for a sustained period of time.
Should it get more expensive then so be it as I'll still not subject myself to the awfulness that is public transport.
