I had 16 years no claims before being given a company car just over 3 years ago. I’m no leaving that job and moving to a new one without a car so need to buy my own again.

I wrongfully assumed unused no claims reduced by a year over a 5 year period before being completely lost, but have been told they all expire after 2.

I was not on the company policy so haven’t earned any through that either.

Anyone got any experience on who are good insurers to speak to in this kind of scenario?

On moneysupermarket there is an option to click no ncb accrued in last 2 years and then it asks if you’ve had 5 years of no claimed prior to that, but still the premiums are higher than I would expect

Thanks

Get a letter from your employer saying you have a company car from x until y, and were claim free during that time. Get your 16 years ncb from 3 years ago, hopefully you kept that. Then go thru a broker explaining the situation and ask them to find an insurer who will look favourably on your circumstances.

How can you have a company car yet not be on their policy?

I’ve just tried that with Adrian flux and they said it wouldn’t work unfortunately

The car was insured in the company’s name along with a few others and any employee could drive it, although I had it exclusively for 3 years

So you were on their policy.

As Twig said, ask for a letter from the employer.

The letter is still only (possibly) useful if you get lucky via a specialist broker though. All the mainstream websites I looked at when retiring with my company car last year, specifically say that NCD only counts if it is from your own individual policy.
Maybe they don’t trust the word of company fleet managers?

Try a broker like Howdens ( formerly A Plan ) , you need to speak with a real person to explain your issue.

With a fleet vehicle insured under a fleet policy it is the car that’s insured not individual drivers. Any member of staff is thus insured to drive any vehicle under the policy - regardless if it is your ‘allocated company car’.

Most firms will generally oblige and provide a letter confirming your driving experience. If they don’t it’s a bit mean with no gain from them.
