Porsche tees up new 911 GT3 ahead of reveal
We're not expecting the 992.2 to change drastically - but you can bet your house on it being provably quicker...
Porsche will show a pair of new GT 911s this Friday afternoon. You probably don’t need us to tell you it’s a GT3, given the shrouded silhouette seen here and the fact that there hasn’t been a 992 GT2 yet. Porsche is promising the new GT3 - the eighth in an illustrious quarter-century of the badge - will be ‘even more emotional, offer customers even more individuality and feature innovative details’.
It also says that new Porsche motorsport-developed 911 will be presented in two variants, so it seems safe to assume that both the regular GT3 and the despoilered Touring will continue alongside each other. Beyond that, very little has been confirmed: Andreas Preuninger will be at the reveal, as will Walter Röhrl and Jörg Bergmeister. There’ll probably be a lap time to talk about.
Otherwise nothing has been made official apart from a 17:30 reveal time. But we can speculate, of course, with plenty in the back catalogue to go off. There won’t be the same excitement of the manual’s return or the Touring’s introduction, as there was for the 991 update, because they both already exist.
That being said, the ‘.2’ cars always tend to bring something just a little bit extra; it’s usually a little extra power (though that seems unlikely now given the constraints around 9,000rpm, atmospheric engines), some additional chassis technology, options that maybe weren’t available before and improving ever-so-slightly a road racer that already felt pretty damn good. For 996, 997 and 991, it’s the ‘.2s; that have been remembered most fondly - we’ll get some idea on Friday whether that’s likely to be the same for 992.
I'm on the fence on this one as it will be difficult to better the 992.1 in meaningful ways, but Porsche are the masters of it.
What I'm not enamoured with is the move to the full digital dash. The 992.1 Dash with the central analogue tacho is pretty much perfection. Feel that's this "advance" is instead a bit of a retrograde step, but lets see on Friday.
High list prices and high interest rates have dampened demand.
