My BMW X1 F48 was repaired after a no fault accident two years ago, (April 2021). Since the repairs we had a couple of occasions, possibly more we wasn’t aware of, where the back passenger footwell carpet was wet. We assumed the kids had spilt water in the back.

In December 2023 the car kept cutting out whilst driving with message saying ‘drive train malfunction’. Mechanic took the car apart as couldn’t figure out what issue was. Discovered lots of issues. Firstly, the water has been leaking for some time through the boot which has affected the electrical parts of the car. Mechanic found a missing grommet wasn’t put back on after repair so there is a hole where the water has been getting in.

He also discovered only one door has been replaced not both doors. But the invoice from repairer says both doors have been replaced & listed in costs. I know this as I requested a copy of the report. Auxillis sent an assessor out to look at the car. Both mechanic & assessor also said the weld to the rear panel is questionable but the assessor didn’t include this in his report.

I spoke to Auxillis who carried out repairs via Admiral insurance. They have been arguing with us since saying no evidence of this water leak from boot at first. We have sent four videos of evidence from mechanic. They have asked a senior engineer at Acorn Assessors to view videos as they assessed car after accident originally. They are now saying it seems we have had the car repaired somewhere else since the accident repairs which we haven’t.

We have owned the car from new, 2017 plate, has only done 38,000 miles. I have already made a formal complaint to Auxillis. I will be escalating it to Financial Ombudsman now.

Can anyone give us any advice on what to do with this? Thanks!

Sorry about the situation. That sounds crap.

I’ve had “interesting” dealings with auxilis before. I certainly won’t again or let my car near anywhere they approve as a body shop.

Can’t advise anything specific other than get your own inspection done as well as anything they are paying for. There are various independent chaps you can pay to do this. At the very least this will give you a good, full understanding of the condition of the car.

Beyond that and the ombudsman as you suggest, maybe got to citizens advice to see what they suggest.
