We often get a lot of grumpy old men (henceforth referred to as GOM) shouting at clouds on here, telling us how terrible modern tech is on cars, but after a few days driving across Europe this week four features stood out to me as absolutely spectacular in terms of quality of life...

Digital clocks

A lot of the GOM crowd say dials with needles are best, but the ability to swap the entire cluster to KPH is brilliant, especially when on a very long journey, so you aren't constantly having to look at piddly little numbers in a hard-to-see colour.

Fancy matrix headlights

Being able to swap between left and right hand driving from the cabin is brilliant. No more silly stickers on the headlights!

Adaptive cruise control

When you are doing 900+km in a day, this is an absolute bloody godsend.

Head-up display

Nav, speed and camera warnings right in your eyeline all the time. Brilliant and undoubtedly safer than looking away.

What other modern stuff that the GOM hate do you actually love?

High beam assist on my previous 5 series. I remember using it for the first time and thinking what a revelation it was. Game changer.

I will add Apple Carplay/Andriod Auto to that list.

Just a nice standard solution to seamlessly (most of the time) integrate your phone with the car

360deg parking cameras. The ones where it projects an image of your car onto a view looking down. Stops curbing alloys. Me like.

As long as it's wireless, yes. A requirement to plug the phone in always seems half-arsed and inconvenient to me.

The three most useful toys I 've encountered since I past my test in the Jurassic era are satnav . LED lights and those brilliant blind spot indicator things . Lane assist ? Cruise (smart or clever ) ? Stop start ? Answers to questions I don't ask.

I have found the cooling seats on my car a revelation. No more sweaty back and they help regulate the temperature better for the people in the front seats better than the zonal air con imo.

Apple car play is another leap forward imo. The tech helps so much when driving in areas that are new to me. Plus the ability to play my Spotify tunes is great.

Did a Google. Looks like both are apparently acceptable although it feels like you would have been right before the term was bastardised.

I do appreciate LED headlights and radar cruise. Plus the 360 degree cameras do come in handy at times, even though I'm still in a habit of using my mirrors more though.

Autohold & electronic & handbrake.

Since I first started driving.
Electric pump for windscreen washers rather than than vaccum.
More than 4 gears.
Radial tyres
ABS
Headlamps better than glow worms.
Many others

Some of these 'modern' suggestions have been around 20+ years! I guess many are only just filtering down to more affordable cars though.

My suggestion - timed or app controlled pre-heating. Great for defrosting without leaving the bed.

That's a beautiful poem.

Regarding the op's question, I'd definitely agree with ACC.

Automatic choke. Inertia reel seatbelts. Side mirrors which can both be adjusted without getting out of the vehicle.

Yes, having a wireless in the car is a godsend.
Trafficators are useful too.

I've never really thought of an automatic gearbox as a modern feature. They must have been around for the best part of 100 years.
