Buying a car on the 22nd which will be transported to my drive.

Do I SORN it (to avoid the £80 fine) and can I then tax it on 1st February or is there a delay between SORN and retaxing?

Best to Sorn it, afaik there's no delay at all between the two, done online it's instant.

It sucks that you'll lose 22 days of "tax" if you do decide to tax it from 01/01 though...

Thanks for the reply.

Yes and only 28 days of February too...

Yep, sorn and retaxing is instant, but if you don't sorn, you will pay the full month for just the few remaining days of January.

I think there is a 5 working day delay after SORN before it can be taxed, at least there used to be.

You got a source for that?

Within the 5 working days you can’t tax it online, but you can tax it at post office.

If you sorn your car online, there’s a message at the end saying as such.

Surely highly unlikely to get a fine between the 22nd and the 1st?

I've forgotten to Sorn a car for months and never had a fine.

You are asking for a source for my thought? It is my lived experience from declaring SORN on previous occasions.

Yes, I do it frequently, swapping around use of my cars. When you SORN it, you receive a message explaining that you cannot re-tax it for 5 days. It's because the database is slow to update. rolleyes It actually only takes 2-3 days in my experience but they say allow 5.

You can declare the vehicle SORN using the new keeper slip, but do it quickly. Once the change of keeper is carried out and a new V5c document issued (especially if it is done online), you have to wait for it to arrive. I once received the message "you cannot declare the vehicle SORN because...", I think it was about no longer being valid, or no longer the keeper?

I have sometimes had a vehicle in the 'untaxed' limbo for several days and there has been no issue as long as you don't use it on the road. After all, this month's VED has already been paid for. smile

I trust your scepticism will be reassured by a tweet from the DVLA themselves?

And further evidence that the Government's IT systems are woefully inadequate:

It's an old thread resurrected, but I picked up a car on 19 December 2019 that was still taxed by the previous owner. He had agreed to hold off a day to notify DVLA of the change of ownership.

Parked it in my space, didn't SORN it or use it, just waited until 1 January 2020 then taxed it and had no issues.

Increase in vehicle excise duty, the road tax on my Touareg will double in March 2024. Can I sorn my vehicle before the end of November 2024, claim the remaining road tax, then retax it from the !st of December 2024 for a 12 months and save a few hundred pounds?

I may be being thick, but do you mean March 2025?

And I'd so, wouldn't the optimum time to "reset" it be February?
