VW Golf R Cabriolet | Spotted

The Golf R hasn't always been all-wheel drive, remember - or just a hot hatch...

It can be hard to recall a time when the VW Golf R wasn't the all-conquering, all-wheel-drive hot hatch. Maybe the Mk8 hasn't reset expectations quite like the Mk7 did, but those after pace and poise in all weathers are still very well served by the flagship Golf.

But the outlook wasn't always so rosy. Once upon a time the expectation was that the most powerful Golf would be bland rather than brilliant to drive. That was the era of the Mk6, which, by dint of losing the V6 which made the R32 something of a legend, delivered no more driving thrill than the GTI - while also looking duller than the Mk5. The first Golf R wasn't exactly a smash hit in any regard.

So how did VW attempt to remedy the situation? Did it add more power, modify the suspension, or maybe drop the price? Nope, none of those. To attract more interest in the Mk6 Golf R, VW made a convertible version. The first R cabrio and very likely to be the last, it launched just as the Mk7 hatch was about to arrive.

Quite why it ever happened has never really been clear, but it's a fascinating thing to pore over a few years later. The drop-top didn't even get the all-wheel drive system that was the signature feature of the R, instead making do with just a single driven axle and 265hp from the old EA113 2.0-litre turbo. It was DSG-only, too, rather heavy (1,539kg) and incredibly expensive - a £38,770 launch price made it more than a 2.7 Porsche Boxster. A substantial price cut of more than £5k (!) followed a few months later.

Though reviewers weren't exactly blown away by the open-top model, it wasn't without merit. One described it as more engaging than a TT RS, another praising both grip and refinement. The market for a very fast, four-seat hatch convertible will have been small, but the Golf R would probably have suited some people down to the ground.

It isn't clear exactly how many were sold, though it can't have been many - even when the price dropped to £33k. All that said, at considerably less than half that money (and more than £20k off its new price), this Golf R Cabriolet looks a whole lot more recommendable. Now, of course, £15k buys all manner of nice convertibles - and January is always a good time to do deals - but those after something a bit different could do a whole lot worse. When did you last see one, if ever? TTs are everywhere...

A 63-plated car, this Golf R cab has covered just 36,000 miles in that time. Perhaps it's the much-missed sunlight in these images or the presence of buttons and instruments in a Golf interior, but the R looks really good for those miles as well. Beyond the obvious wear to the driver's seat it's flawless, black paint lustrous and Talladega wheels far nicer than anything currently offered on a fast Golf. Yes, we'd all quite like a Boxster - but you're not getting a 2013 Porsche for £15,000.

Maybe we're going a bit mad in bleak mid winter, but a Golf R cabrio seems no more silly, all things being relative, than a drop-top T-Roc. Launched when it was with the price tag it had, the Golf was always doomed to fail. But many a decent car has suffered a misplaced launch strategy. And while clearly this will never be one of the iconic Golfs, the R arguably makes more sense than it ever has - the roof goes down and it'll do 155mph, at the end of the day. British buyers have cheerily bought convertibles with far fewer attributes.

Pointless car, - ridiculous price. I know prices are silly at the moment but should have a four figure price tag. Even then not worth considering.

Well there is a thing I never knew existed!

If I needed a 4 seater convertible I have to say I'd be getting excited - what's not to like - just the performance looks a little lower than I would have imagined.

Within the limitations of the genre - a lovely thing!

never thought that version of Golf cabrio was all that nice looking - boot is too short yet also too long to make the shape appealing. An R variant would be interesting though.

Mhem, kind of nice, bit expensive
Basically a Golf GTI Cab with a bit more power and an R badge
Fine if that's what you want

Have to say I do like the clean look compared to todays overly "blinged" car
The single line from S pillar to back of hood is nice

Not my thing but soft tops do have a certain appeal, I have enjoyed the odd ones I've had for the roof down time

Even though I wouldn't want this particular convertible, there is not a single thing you've said here that makes any sense whatsoever.

Pointless car? Clearly it wasn't as somebody ordered it new and unlike multi-million pound supercar trinkets it's been driven. Also, believe it or not, some of us actually like using convertibles in the UK - I've owned a couple myself over the years.

Ridiculous price? Given that Mk VI Golf R's for sale on PH range in price between £13k and almost £21k it's not ridiculous at all.

It should have a four figure price tag? Based on what metric? I'll wait. In fact, we all will.

Not worth considering? By you? Maybe. There are enough who will see differently this - this car will be sold before the summer.

Never knew these existed!

Did they make a cabriolet of the previous generation? I can imagine the sound of the previous R's VR6 engine would have added to the allure a bit, these 4-pots never sound good, see the current crop for reference!

I'm not offended by it, it looks ok with the top down and looks a nice spec. If I was in the market for a middle of the road 4 seater convertible, I would consider it, but I do love my performance cars and I can't forgive VW for only giving it 2WD and that auto box, the R badge doesn't belong in my opinion.

Fantastic car for someone though and I am sure it will sell easily on rarity alone to someone that wants to stand apart a bit from the crowd. In fact, this is probably the most head turning Golf R out there since all the others just look like diesels with big wheels...

I quite like the look of them to be honest, and you'd pay similar for a 2013 Scirocco R (same engine, FWD) so I don't think it's too far out once you've negotiated a bit.

Didnt make a whole lot of sense new, as surely the target market of.. erm, ladies what lunch would have been more than happy with the 207 bhp Golf gti convertible if it was style they were after, but fair play for VW for makign it.

Price is a tad steep but it’s not a four figure car because we’re not living in 1996 anymore. I’d get a S3 8V convertible for this money.

Don't think there was a MkV cabriolet, but you can get a VW Eos with the 3.2 VR6 for less than half the price of the R (though they considerably older and more boat like to drive)

Completely pointless car but it does look quite pretty with the top down. A fair chunk of people would probably still go for it if it had half the power but kept the R styling touches (and was much cheaper). It would make a reasonable cruiser and do what most would use this car for anyway

Very rare cars, I had a hard top hatch model as my last car and I think I only saw another two on the roads in the 3yrs I had mine, I believe there were less than 1000 in the UK. I've only ever seen one convertibles and that was at a VW show. I had mine running 370bhp and 410lbft and it was a rocket for its time.... I did go through an engine in mine, had it rebuilt only for the gearbox to go a few months later, the DSG gearbox's are 7k from VW and they are almost impossible to find second hand so ended up selling for just 8k with it needing a new box. After all the heartache and financial doom I do still miss mine

Saw a T-Roc Convertible the other day. It looked utterly ridiculous. This is far better but ultimately not for me.

Like a few others it seems, I had no idea these existed!

Intriguing car, and more than a bit compelling, imo. Given the choice, I genuinely think I'd pick this over a full fat Golf R - regardless of cost.

One of the silliest things I've seen on here for a while and clearly out of touch with the market!

Anyway o/t - they're really good to drive, I was in the market for a blue one when I bought my most recent TTS cab but there was only white ones available at the time and I needed a replacement for a lease handback quite quick. I would still have one and price wise they aren't bad value at all.
