Are you using the right number? If the V5 is not in your name you need to use the 12 digit one from the green new keeper supplement.
I've just taxed a new car this afternoon online using just that number, not even got the car yet, so it certainly does work (sometimes!)

It is possible that it does not like, or alternatively perhaps needs, spaces.

Has it got a current MOT? If not you won’t be able to tax it...

I had this same problem, the reason you cant tax it with the old v5 is that they have already issued a new number if the p/o did it online instead of through the post
if you ring up you will be able to tax it over the phone now rather than online.

Or do it the old fashioned way and take the V5 slip into the Post Office and either pay in full or set up a direct debit.

I've had this happen a couple of times where I was given the wrong slip, and the document reference number didn't register online.

That is your problem right there. MID won't update for 24 hours and you can't tax it without valid insurance and MOT.

OP, what's the exact message the tax service gives when trying it?

Recently been in the same situation as the OP. The reference highlighted in the image didn't work, the number in the top right corner of the slip did work.

Just a suggestion but I had his happen to me last year and the car was previously taxed on Disability so where it says tax class check if it says private as if it’s still saying class disabled you can’t tax online !
