Glass roof, carbon trim, not a mark on the bodywork. So came up looking for a cheap (£1500) v12, going away to count my cash to aee what i can bid on this instead!

I wish I could stretch to an RS6 chaps - my financial stature is somewhat limited though! I had considered C5 but the youngest and fittest still harbour a sobering ability to yank ones pants down.
Saw a lovely C7 in a tasteful spec but even with 70k miles it was 45k of your sterling. Ouch.
I have settled into something related but more “moderately brisk” than “Millenium Falcon”:
05 B7 S4 Avant (Spanish, of course). Not a single option on it as far as I can tell, but it seems straight and has room for stuff aside from a squashy bag. Foolish or cool-ish - the wallet decides!

Ahh, the 'massive timing chain at the back of the engine' S4. I'm assuming from your 11mpg comment that VAG didn't see fit to change the spaniards gear and diff ratios from the B6 to the B7 so you'll frequently be enjoying the 3k rpm V8 noise at barely over legal speeds. Saw a lovely C7 in a tasteful spec but even with 70k miles it was 45k of your sterling. Ouch.

There is, IIRC, a diff change that can be done to rectify the situation but obviously being 4wd it isn't easy or cheap. The auto didn't suffer the high rev problem of the manual (we had a B6 auto S4 Cab) but did throw in a tremendously sluggish gear change as torment recompense.
There is anecdotal evidence that B7's have a marginally more robust timing chain than the B6 but after lots of t'internet searching I did find B7's torn down in the similar manner to the B6 so best of luck.
Our S4 suddenly gave up the ghost at 140k miles not on timing chain issues but unidentified multiple sensor failings much like the 5 pot S3's were prone to do when they got leggy - like ours started to do. Both were got rid of with full disclosure of faults and just days remaining on the MoT's with happy buyers who swore blind they'd have them fixed in no time at all... but being the geek I am I infrequently check their MoT status to discover they were never tested ever again.
Once up and awake I'll find and post a picture of the aforementioned chain; it is both epic and terrifying in equal measure... and that's when it's working!

E24man - yup seen that picture. Terrifying and yet kind of magnificently absurd. Not sure why Audi thought more complexity was the answer (aside from space constraints) but there you go. I’ve persuaded myself that I’ll not think about it but instead focus on the not insubstantial tasks of fueling and lubing the thing. Gearing is close and short for a 4.2 but not unmanageable in the SE - how often can you reach let alone exceed the posted limit unless on an epic mission / on track, after all? Tickle it in top and it adds sped pleasingly on the m-way. Likes revs but doesn’t mind lugging. Bit muted but will see about that...
1-3-5 works below 40, at which point I slot 6 and revel in the decent torque backed by proper response and distant woofle. Not last word in any category but other half is happy to indulge me at this level as well as drive it herself. Room for eventual arrival in spring (minus discernible inheritance due to aforementioned appetite of S4 for the petroleum distillate...).
Would I prefer an RS4/6 or M3/5? You bet. But needing a 4 seat, 4 door car with decent load capacity but smallish footprint that I could acquire without substaual leverage (but was also ULEZ compliant) narrowed the field somewhat. I’ll settle for it not blowing holes in my hopes for a solvent existence!

The well known start up rattle of the B6/B7 V8 can be easily mitigated if you use it every day simply by changing from the skinny 0/30 (or is it 0/40) to a 5/30 or 5/40 oil. It reduces the rattle from a couple of seconds to a split-second or nothing; the rattle is of course the period in which damage is accrued.
We had ours from sub-40k miles to over 140k miles with nothing of note going wrong save for the regular consumption of tyres; it did everything it said on the tin and did it well although it was never that inspiring to press on in. The auto is geared really quite differently to the manual and reasonable consumption figures can be realised without driving Miss Daisy.
The interior was a nice enough place although the plastics were noticeable harder and cheaper than the Munich offerings of the period but all the toys worked perfectly including the triple layered convertible roof and the cool-box at the back of the glove box.
Once at 140k miles it just gave up and c£400 spent at a well-reputed Indy told us that we'd be looking at engine out to discover what was wrong and no clear sign of whether it could be fixed at all. I popped it on ebay with three weeks MoT left for a £100 start and after three days some gentlemen from Bedford gave me £2400 in cash to stop the auction which had got to £1350 already.
They're rapid enough cars and very competent in every area, and the S4 hasn't the give-away arches, vents and grills of the RS to shout out its performance; the S4 is a bit of Q car and well worth the experience, but I would advise shedding it like a skin when the almost inevitable unknown age related problems start.

Anyone got experience of the F-Type? I parked next to one at a National Trust place yesterday (I am sooooo middle-aged), it looked great in a light blue colour.
Coincidentally they were just leaving as I returned to my car, and it sounded awesome. Don't know it it was the V6 or V8, I'm not sure if they are badged as such but I forgot to look anyway.
Still obviously not cheap at £35k, but given the list price of these they seem to take quite a hit in the first couple of years.
I know 0-60 isn't everything, but 5.7 secs doesn't seem particularly fast (these days), so just interested in what they are like as a drive overall?

By all accounts the V6 is the sweet spot of the big engines as far as handling goes (less weight upfront) though the 2ltr 4 pot is reputed as quite the drivers car (even less weight over the nose).
As much as I wouldn't mind one myself (tin top, dark blue/silver alloys for preference) it's never going to happen as, price aside, it's a good 14 to 20cm wider (depending on who you read) than my XK and that is pushing my comfort zone in car size on the roads around my way as it is.

ATM - you have owned most things going! How was your oil consumption?
I didn't really notice the oil consumption. I started doing over 600 miles per week which meant 2 tanks of go juice. Found these pics from an October 2012 posting. Link below. I bought the car without thinking as a friend offered it me for 6500 with a borky gearbox. That cost me another 1900 I think to repair. I was hoping it would be less. Chopped it in as none of my friends would touch it. Got 4250 I think which was too cheap. If I had one now I'd try thinner tyres on the back and fatter on the front like they do with the modern rs3. It was always a bit understeery. Although back then I was always scared of damaging the diffs as I'd heard some garbage about mismatched tyres breaking stuff. Not sure I believe that now.

this is weird, isn't it. My XK looks big and the F type I fancy looks small, but is actually bigger!
Aye, there's a red one that parks up outside the local Wetherspoons at work and as you say it looks smaller all round though it's only significantly smaller than the XK in length (some 30cm) and due to that it looks far more square than it really should (more so in red for some reason). I still like them but only in darker colours.ATM said:
Nice. I am thinking about a set of 17s so I can get the 18s refurbished but may wait as I've got some other stuff to do. Quite fancy sharpening the handling a little but it's not meant to be an Elise. I've had a B7 before briefly and this one is very similar only more thirsty!l. So long as that's the main expense I'll be satisfied.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
