Cherished Plate Retention

Hi, never been into Cherished plates, but just wondering if anyone can help with a question for my Dad.
He has a number on retention with most of the 10yr period left., if he pays the fee and puts it onto his car now, but say in a year decides to put it back onto retention , does he need to pay again or can he use the remainder of the original 10 yr retention period.

If it’s on retention then he doesn’t have to pay a fee to put it on a car now, but when he takes it off again he will have to pay the retention again and will get a fresh 10 years.

You don't have to pay a fee to put it on a vehicle you only have to pay a fee to put it on retention. Fee is currently £80.
