Towing a vehicle
Discussion
Okay so what is the best vehicle for towing a car trailer with a car such as a race car.
Smaller the better and legal. Been looking at pick up trucks which seems the way things are going, but are there any 4x4s capable or estates?
Ive seen the mitsi shogun but at 27mpg im not sure.
Anything up to 8k.
Will be an everyday vehicle also so not to keen on driving a transit everday, will still consider though.
Thanks

The towing vehicle really needs to be heavier than the combined trailor and track car wieght in this instance.
So that should narrow the search slightly.
Large van is a good choice as it has many other uses.
4x4 is also good.
estate car will be near the combined tow wieght. Its not something i would choose.
I tow a car trailor at least twice a week,so have some expierience.

Have a look through this from S,P&L. Bear in mind that regardless of what licence you have you will be restricted by what the vehicle manufacturers say is the maximum permitted towing weight for that vehicle.

These have a huge towing capactity if i remember.
They also come in a 4wd version. Would be a nice place to sit daily.

2 slight problems, they arnt great on fuel and they weigh a-fking-lot, depends on what licence you have though.

Something with a full chassis and a bit of weight to it, preferably designed with towing in mind.

Are all good tow vehicles.
Obviously not all are available to the UK domestic market but they occasionally crop up on autotrader or ebay for reasonable money.
Personally I would not chose to tow a car with another car having towed many times.
You also want the biggest engine and the best brakes you can afford.

American imports are great for towing and the majority of the bigger things which are designed for towing (pickups etc) have tow hitches which are built into the chassis, not bolted on like ours are. The problem is that they use a different size towball which is not compatible with the UK 50mm standard, so you either need to modify the vehicle or modify the trailer.
I tow my track car with a Mercedes R-class. Very capable tow car, drives more like a car than most other 4x4s, nice place to be inside:
