I do believe if it isn't a private reg, I.e it's the original one for the car. Then it can't be changed to another car.

Could easily be wrong!

I wasn't aware that there was actually such a thing as a "private reg plate"? I thought a registration number was a registration number once it was on a car.

Yes it can, it's only when the DVLA issue a new age related number plate for a car, usually on old car short number because the original registration has been sold that they specify the new number is non transferable.

OP, Have you tried searching the reg number sites for something similar ?

If you know the car the plate is on is it local to you? If so, follow it. Simples. smile

Note on the windscreen?

Personally, I'd offer to buy the car...

Do HPI checks include details of the current owner?

A V888?

Although I'm not sure the DVLA will accept the request for this reason...

Can't you use that form and give a 'reasonable' reason for needing their details - eg they keep parking on your private lane for example?

i guess i could, im just concerned if they confront me. ie. they ask me the question " sir you mention on your V888 that this nissan micra parks in front of your drive causing an obsticle when you get in and out of your drive" but our records show this car is registered in Scotland and you live in Berkshire....

I think it's all the parking cowboys do. I think there are so many applications that they do not have time to vet any of them. Could be wrong though smile

Reg plates are area specific iirc..
eg. 'DAD' in the old style was always around Gloucester and 'ABS' was something like Inverness...

Some geek must have posted this kind of reference info on the internet somewhere with a list ???

Since the latest number plate style changed, the first two letters are area specific e.g. RA08 XXX is Reading

Once you find the area, perhaps you can spend a few days in Private Detective mode....
biggrin

Anybody know anyone in the police force?
I know someone who used to be in the police force but got 'released' for divulging the whereabouts of a registered vehicle to a friend of his who then went round the house and 'acted' on the information given!!

You can't go asking a police officer to check someone out. Especially not these days with every computer key monitored. They would be looking for a new job

Unless you stumble across the car in question or see it advertised somewhere, there is little chance aside from asking the dvla the whereabouts of the registration in question,I don't think I would even find the one I'm after that way either so never bothered .

It's a shame there isn't some kind of note proxy service - write to DVLA requesting owner contact you with a brief (150 word?) explanation as to why, but doesn't give you any info.
