Never liked these, I think they look awful.
It’s a funny one the 348. I think they’re the best looking Ferrari of the last 30-odd years, trumping even the 355 and 456

But then I also love the Shamal and SZ

I actually don't find a 355 very pleasant to look at at all but I still think it's the only Ferrari V8 variant that looks better than the original car it's based on (OK, mid engined V8 as a Portofino trumps a California all day long too).

I’ve had a long hankering for a 348 and can remember when you could pick one up for twenty something. Should have gone for it!
I had the same thought but my dad persuaded me that it was a bad idea..... never had had a ferrari
i'd be certain it would be slow and quite st but I just think it looks so perfect and it's a V8 so

ETA not for everyone clearly laugh

Both the SZ and the Shamal were poster cars when I was growing up. They just look mean and thuggish. A medallion and a hairy chest were the bare minimum prerequisite before you could even express an interest I guess…

The 348 is a fabulous piece of design and the 355 is the greatest ever automotive facelift.

Ageing well, I’ll give them that. I think that we have such high expectations of Ferrari that their output is only really appreciated in retrospect.

That burgundy F355 should serve as a reminder than Ferraris almost always look better in anything other than red.

Sublime and if I could afford it I would but it unseen, just because of the colour.

I have to say that is beautiful in that colour but it’s not a patch on the 288. I’m also a Shamal and SZ amongst other oddities but thankfully most of those kinds of manufacturers produced some avant garde designs alongside other beautiful cars too.

288 is gorgeous to my eyes, stunning. I have a feeling the 360 and 430 will have their day. They have a retro almost, I said ALMOST Dino feel about them, an almost aggressive femininity.

The problem is that none of these V8 Ferraris are particularly good cars. Even though some look nice. The 355 probably the best of the lot but these days to me they just feel old and slow. There isn’t much engineering integrity to fall back on, so you are just left with 2010s hot hatch performance. Whereas get in an old 911 and the thing is just a delight to interact with and be in. Even though you’re going slowly. Even a 912

Just because they 'feel old and slow' to you doesn't make them not particularly good cars - each of the 355, 360, 430 etc are fast enough to show a clean pair of heals to a contemporary 911 Carerra, and yet the floods of Porsche fanboys that buy those don't complain about their lack of pace?

I still remember the first time I drove a 355 (nearly 30 years ago now!!), a manual GTS variant in dog d*ck red; on a warm dry day with the roof panel out it was an awesome experience, certainly no complaints at the time about the pace of it and nowadays can't imagine i'd readily complain. The engine was a joy to listen to, the gearbox entertaining click-clacking across the gate, and 3 pedals to dance on during downchanges - not perfection (the steering wheel would need to come further back towards the driver for me), but certainly not far off. I'd like my 355GTB in manual guise wearing Giallo Fly I think!

I was pleasantly surprised by my 360; I think it drives really nicely and more than I was anticipating - I only really got it because of the noise.

It's ironic that you describe the Ferraris and old and slow, and instead recommend an old and slow 911.

Something can be tactile and engaging without needing to be travelling at Mach 3. This is the problem with modern dross. 500 hp feels boring.

An S1 Elise isn't fast but it's utterly joyous.

Manufacturers have got swept up in the clamour for numbers as people assess the joy of driving as a game of Top Trumps and not as a sensory experience.

This video describes brilliantly how it's not how fast something goes it's how it goes fast.

The TVR V8S, more fun because it isn't as fast or handles as well as other cars, which means it is more fun at lower speeds.

15:22 for the best noise.
