I understand there will be cameras at every entrance/exit road to the ULEZ area but does anyone know how it works within the zone? Say if you drive 1mile entirely within Z2 to go shopping, is it likely you will get pinged? Is there a map of camera locations or any information of how frequently they are placed?

I might have missed it, but I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned this yet... when we all go EV, surely this discussion about air quality will become moot?

Then it will become about congestion again. Once they have another stream of revenue councils they aren't going to let go of it; those local authority pension pots don't stuff themselves full you know!

About 15 years ago you could park for free in my old area in SW London.

It was never a problem finding space but the council convinced people that others were parking their cars in our streets due to the station a full mile away.

They said a small charge to administrate it.

Started at £40 a year, it's now £190 a year and draconianally enforced.

Friends, visitors even myself have paid fines as well as the yearly charge.

I wrote to my MP about it. He replied that the charges and fines helped lower the council tax.

That MP

Khaaaaaannnnnnnnn!

Khhhhaaaaannnnnnnnn!

Kirk mode off!
We live about a ten minute walk of Mortlake Station. Between it and Richmond Park.

A few years ago Richmond council invited comments from residents about their intention to turn our street and others into a resident parking zone.

After that consultation the council decided not to introduce the zone.

They actually listened!

Next week we're moving to a road almost equidistant to the station. The new house is 50 yards inside the ULEZ zone. It has a resident parking scheme. £400 a year for two cars. Dammit!

Or, we park 100 yards away across the South Circ where there's no restrictions thanks to the earlier decision..

...in a fun and interesting way. So what? You want a free forum to complain on or not?
Do you know the difference between a complaint and a comment ?

Obviously not.

Nice. Another regressive tax which will have virtually no impact on the environment but will reduce freedom for financially struggling families.

My e46 330i is ULEZ ok and I live in Zone 2 so we’ll within the new ULEZ. TBH I only use it for long trips up to the Midlands where I am originally from. Most of the time I use my cycle for town work and tube if weather is bad.
I welcome getting the polluting cars off the road. Since lockdown most of central London the air quality has noticeably improved and the new cycle lanes have really helped.

Still got the black spots with HGVs, old taxis and coaches/buses on main arteries like the Euston Road but overall it’s better so making it larger is a positive outcome.

Now we need much more secure bike parking.

HGV's & 3.5t vans & above have had to be Euro6 for longer than the ULEZ has existed so air quality from those hasn't changed.

So PH have just read the blurb & not researched it. The reason some cars are exempt despite being, say, Euro3 is because the London ULEZ is not based on the whole Euro standards, just the NOx level. My 2002 STR is Euro3 but the NOx level is only a quarter of the Euro4 requirement, so it's exempt.

Not really, Tail pipe emissions are most obvious but tyre ans brake dust are also big pollutants and creators of carcinogenic PM2.5.

Ever wondered why the tube is so filthy even tho no tyres or exhaust pipes. Metal grinding the rails and the brakes. It comes from cars, trucks and buses too.

I live just outside of the south circular and both cars are Euro 6 petrols.

I therefore think that this is an excellent idea, particularly for my lungs (and for the lungs of my children) when I / they go into central London.

This kind of action is inevitable everywhere eventually - regardless of which party or politician is in charge!

Wrong. NOx emissions are dreadful, have a read on them. The link below shows the road transport decline in NOx since the 90s as progressively tougher Euro standards have come in:

With the average house price in London just over £500000 surely if you live there and your car isn’t ULEZ exempt you just change it for one that is.
If you bought your London average priced house 30 years ago it would have cost say £200,000. Just because the value now is £500,000 doesn't mean that you can easily afford to change your car.

I live just inside the South Circular. I walked along my street of 300 houses the other day and counted 46 definite non compliant car.

Either there's going to be a lot of people just sucking it up or there'll be uproar on Monday

It’s been well advertised and for so long, then anyone falling foul are ok with it have had their head in the sand. To be compliant you don’t need to buy a full EV or new car. Plenty of old and cheap cars that are still ULEZ OK

They have randomly deployed mobile cameras as well as the fixed ones

How lucky are you on the whole?

It may well be cheaper to potter around locally without paying compared to how often you get fined.

Cheers

One of the biggest outputs of NOx are household boilers (more so than private vehicles, remember commercial vehicles have had to be Euro6 before ULEZ was introduced) which is why TFL specifically mentions exhaust pipe emissions.

So you're in favour of a tax on boilers too?

I’m surprised the ULEZ is as small as what it is, but now understand from some posts made on here that this is to do with TfL’s area of control.

I’m sure that there will be legislation soon to expand it to encompass the whole area around the M25.

The current ULEZ measures about 11 miles north to south and 15 miles east to west. Look at Greater Manchester’s impending CAZ, that will be about 25 miles north to south and 27 miles east to west; and Greater Manchester is a much smaller city than Greater London. That said, Manchester’s CAZ is much less punitive to normal people, as it will only apply to commercial vehicles such as taxis, private hire, vans, buses, coaches and lorries.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.
