RE: 'Unstoppable' Defender OCTA officially unveiled
Discussion
Anyone else having Defender overload ? I was in a Fiesta (irony not lost) and in a queue of maybe ten cars, six of them were Defenders, all of them black or grey.
How many have they sold, must be massive numbers already. I quite like them but when there are more about than little Fords you have to wonder.

I apologise for my pedantry in advance……….
I was reading about this in a mag and this is a zoomed-in screenshot of the “Octa” badge which as far as I can work out is a square of plastic with a square key socket. Anyway, the bit that made my teeth itch was the lack of alignment with the lower trim where the door meets the rear flank panel. I know it won’t make a blind bit of difference to the driving experience, but on a £158k car, I expect a little more attention to detail.
A good bit - I love the wheels of the off-road version.
A bad bit - the matt paint tells me all I need to know in terms of who this is aimed at.

Depends where you live, i see a tonne of Defenders, RRS and velars but i also live in Warwickshire so the majority are JLR employees. How many have they sold, must be massive numbers already. I quite like them but when there are more about than little Fords you have to wonder.

They all do that sir. It doesn't bother me much on mine but nowt lines up-I like to think of it as intensional to go for the old nailed together in Solihull look.Anyway, the bit that made my teeth itch was the lack of alignment with the lower trim where the door meets the rear flank panel. With a Land Rover when it's only the stereo conking out and the panel gaps misaligning you consider yourself to have a good one!
It’s all very well LR wanting a slice of the G63’s stollen, but a key part of the latter’s appeal is its reliability / quality control.
And thus far for LR’s latest ‘special’, it’s situation normal…

OK for a container ship. Unneccessary and overkill on a Land Rover.
Debatable in all fairness, even super tough cerakoted or hard anodized steel recovery eyes (if used Regularly) always rust as the coating wears away. So although trivial, if I’d paid £180k on something and after a few recoveries my towing eyes became unsightly- and attracting the inevitable “pay all that money for a new Land Rover and it still rusts!” Comments, I think it’s a great idea. If nothing else shows a great attention to detail which you’d assume would be carried across to the rest of the workmanship on the car… hats off I say. Love it. garypotter said:
could they make this defender any more bland looking!!
Over priced over stolen and uninsurable, not for me whatever chintzy bits they put on.
New Defenders aren’t stolen much but don’t let me stop you reading the Daily Fail.Over priced over stolen and uninsurable, not for me whatever chintzy bits they put on.
Oh yes forgot to add mine costs £400 per year to insure.

An illuminating interview with the programme director for this, Jamal Hameedi on TheSmokingTire.
Apparently the Octa has hydraulically linked suspension (even more complex than the system used by McLaren), in tandem with air suspension.
And it's got special seats with bass transducers that can be used instead of subwoofers to feel the music, plus it acts to give you a massage. Pretty cool.

And FFS why is it that a single, powerfully built chap driving his Rangie/Defender to his business premises - using precisely 0% of it's off-road capability - is seen as the most natural thing in the world and something to aspire to for any self-respecting PHer, whereas a woman driving her Rangie/Defender to drop the kids off at school - also using precisely 0% of it's off-road capability but at least using more of its seating capacity - is an abomination and emblematic of all that is wrong with the world? Coming out with that sort of crap in 2024 just makes you look like a bitter old divorcee/incel whose life hasn't turned out as well as hoped.
Hate by proxy. The new voluntary underclass anyone can join, so long as one is a white male. Ugly women can have country membership if they bring biscuits and remember their place. As you say, it just helps one spot the string vest, losers in the modern work and social environments as you can't always rely on them being in their traditional roles, locations or wearing their traditional uniforms. They're out there now in all walks of life, hiding in their little closets desperate to come out. Cars like this are superb for getting misogynists, racists and professional losers to instantly out themselves in any environment.
What's more fun than a life sized Tonia toy? A life sized Tonka toy with an utterly facile V8 and dollop of pointless excess power.
Sure, it'll break down a bit more than a Corolla but that just means it's best to also have other cars.
It's probably not a cure for self loathing or a valid transference therapy.
As the future of silly V8s inexorably heads to its close, one would be a fool to not celebrate their silliness and futility.
